I blew up the red laser, went to the bridge as the only place I know I ccan get through the membrane to the host world. I ended up, sadly predictably, In a spot with another machine, and no place to go except back to the bridge. Am I missing something that everyone else sees?
Hang on, I found the lever that got me back to main area, but I am still on the wrong side of where I need to be. Found a way aound to the other side, walked all over and accomplished nothing.
Now, you say you wound up in a place with another machine. Did you try to do anything with it? If what you tried didn't work, think about how you can restore power/functionality to it.
Edit: Okay, you wound up back where you needed to be. Try looking around. Something should have changed.
This exploration guide can be helpful if/when you get stuck.

I'm 17 hrs into Obduction and only have two trees plugged in so far, with only 5 achievements, safe to say I'm going slower than average. It was a little frustrating at first until I understood the objective and got the swapping machanics. Now I'm having fun with it. I like to explore a lot and the spatial puzzles are fun for me too, pencil and paper helps sometimes. I found a copy of a Myst book on Hunrath, found some good writing in that room too, fun exploring :)
I have to start over again, and I still hate this game. There are only two tasks to be accomplished in each world: Destroy the evil red laser, and turn on the water for the tree. Everything else is just details. The only story is war, and the Villein (read: Villains) apparently capturing others and using them for food. Nice. I preferred Atrus's disfunctional family.
(There are only two tasks to be accomplished in every Myst world: find a blue/red page, and get back to Myst. There is only one task to be accomplished in every Super Mario world: run right and hit the flag. Everything else is just details. Funny how oversimplification works, isn't it?)
Actually, you don't need to get any of the blue and red pages in Myst. If you know the pattern to punch in inside the fireplace (page 158 in the pattern book), then you only have to flip all the switches on the island, and unswitch the one on the dock. Then you get the white sheet, go through the fireplace to Atrus and give the white sheet to him. Game over. Isn't it funny what a little knowledge can do?
Of course, by now, you all know I did slog through the whole game. I can, from my post game perspective see,Top Gun's internal logic he was on about. That wasn't entirely evident from within the game, though. At least to me. Maybe I've been away from major title games too long and gotten out of touch with game evolution. Anyway, I got through it. It has its moments, but I don't really get any satisfaction from the story. In the Myst series, you know everything you see is the result of a written book by someone using some strange and mystical power to form the worlds. I don't know any more about the why of the world in Obduction then I did before I played it. It's an ending without an explanation.
