Do most players use the topographic map mode?
The mode that shows elevation? I'm just curious if most players can judge elevation without needing to use it.

I too have been to Gettysburg a few times and know the terrain like my own backyard, but I always have the overlay on.

I have it on because some times what looks like a hill isnt actually a hill or what looks flat isnt actually flat. And it lets me precisely judge the terrain for my artillery

The first key I hit at the start of any engagement is "M". Vital to fighting the battle.

First key I hit is P, then M. I guess after a while you get so familiar with the map / terrain that the topo-graphics (see wut I did there?) are no longer needed.

Toggle on and off - I've walked Gettysburg for more than 40 days on various trips over the years; but, every now and then I need to see if my unit is in precisely on the correct pixel for the topo lines.

This is kind of a micromanagement issue/game design problem.

The game is already moving units around a bit shifting them left or right to align my lines automatically. Why not have the game auto move the artillery to a more optimal pixel if I've missed the precise point on the map where I need to be to see the enemy?

Same is true with infantry in relation to "cover". Don't get the right pixel and your cover drops by 20%. It seems a bit odd that as a general I need to micromanage to this level of detail and precision.

My brother did his best to conceal the boredom but failed. I thought it was interesting how the same place can be mekka to one guy and a super random patch of dull farmland to the other.

Indeed

Not so much a pilgrimage as on a business route where I had time to kill between meetings.

A day walking Gettysburg is better than hanging out in a hotel room.

I've done the same thing at Manassas, Antietam, Cold Harbor, Atlanta, Chattanooga, etc...

I'm on the road 70% of the time.

Nothing comes without a price ;-)

"M" might as well stand for "Must Have".
I find the contour lines essential for placing artillery.

I've been to Gettysburg as well (though only twice - not often enough or long enough for me!) and I've poured over topographic maps of the battlefield, but I learned long ago that what you expect the battlefield to look like may not be precisely reflected in a game. I'm unwilling to lose a scenario because I've placed my batteries where I think the hill crest should be as opposed to where it is on the game map! LOL

I use it, and I hope the elevation would be more exaggarated to make artillery placement easier.
