I have Win7 Ultimate 64bit, but I've understood this is an universal problem.
I have managed to live with these guidelines:
- Save the game before clicking the end turn (the game might auto save, but not sure)
- Do not move the mouse during the calculation or try to move or zoom the map
- Do not alt-tab (etc win keys) during the calculation
- Enjoy a nice cup of coffee
1. Open the folder where the game is installed and delete a file named "userpath.ini". This will force the game to save in the game main folder instead of "Documents\My Games\Civil War II\CW2\....". As this is usually a protected folder, some security programs can interfere and cause crashes.
2. Due to the same reasons, install the game in a different folder than the default one (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\.......). Install it, for example, in "C:\Games\......".
For installing a Steam game in a different folder, you'll need to add a new Steam library folder. Please follow the following tutorial on how to do it:
http://www.mameau.com/add-existing-steam-library-folders/
3. Make sure that the "Turn Compression" option is turned off in the game options menu.
Keeps crashing during processing at end of turn - Sorry, Critical error!
What a disappointment.
I tried this,
'1. Open the folder where the game is installed and delete a file named "userpath.ini". This will force the game to save in the game main folder instead of "Documents\My Games\Civil War II\CW2\....". As this is usually a protected folder, some security programs can interfere and cause crashes."'
but the game crashed again turn 3.
Turn compression is off.
Why would I have problems with the default Steam game folder created for CW2?
No other program created for Steam games ever has a problem with file protection.
A lot of people over at the Ageod forum are experiencing this game crash; this problem has been happening for months and still no fix!
http://www.ageod-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?342-CW2-Technical-support-Aide-technique
Because not all programs behave/operate the same way. I strongly suggest for you to change the game installation folder.
Most of people who have experienced crashes with the game have their issues fixed.
There are two different types of crashes:
1. Crashes caused by the game: These are fixed during the patching process; the developer is still patching the game and providing ongoing support for the game.
2. Crashes caused by Windows conflicts: These are usually fixed by the suggestions I mentioned above. But it can depends on the player's Windows setup.
Could you please post your issue in the developer's forum. Please also attach a copy of your "!Mainlog.txt". You should be able to locate that file in the game main folder ..\CW2\Logs.
Please note that you have to attach the log file from immediately after having a crash, as the log file is changed each time you run the game again.
Gotcha.
Funny how pretty much every other game on Steam has no problem with my system "issues".
If the issues experienced by the players are from the first nature, then the problem is on the side of the game. It's a bug of the game, in other words.
If the issues are caused by Windows conflicts or Windows setup, then the issue is on the players system side. The fact that your have your other Steam games running, doesn't prove that you don't have a conflict or an issue with your Windows permissions. Games use different engines and different Windows resources. That's the reason why some users experience issues with a game and others don't. This is the nature of PC games, since DOS.
I would like to help you, that's the reason why I'm asking you to jump through hoops , as this already have helped other players on similar circunstances.
In case if it's a game bug, we would like to take a look at the log file, so that we can fix the issue in a future patch. Could you please post your issue in the developer's forum and attach a copy of your "!Mainlog.txt" so that they can take a look at it?
I don't touch the mouse when the turn is processed; maybe this did have something to do with the crash.
Anyway, the game is incredibly deep and very enjoable now(if I could only learn some of the finer points of strategy; I just cannot fathom the enemies intentions and strength.
The music is great and the map is beautiful.
The developers obviously put a lot of love into CW2.
