Civil War 2 vs. Ultimate General: Civil War
Before buying a new Civil War game: I am a strategist gamer who would love a Civil war game. I am down to 2 games: Civil War 2 or the Ultimate General: Civil War. I would love to hear from you on which is better and why. Thanks for your time on this.

There are 2 very different games, its like comparing apple and pear. One is a turn by turn grand strategy game and the other one is a real time action strategy game focusing on battle level. I suggest you watch some videos on youtube and see what type of game you prefer.

I used to own (many Years ago) merican Civil War: The Road from Fort Sumter to Appomattox I would say that what you guys have told me that "Civil War 2" would be as close to this as possible?

The Civil War Triumvirate for me is Civil War 2, Ultimate General: Civil War and Scourge of War Gettysburg. The latter two are realtime, with UG being very much like an RTS. SoW is graphically inferior, but man it captures the chaos of war much better and is paced much slower.

It looks like you definitely want more of a turn based experienced, so I would recomment Civil War 2, but just know this game is far more complex than the others.

I want to thank all of you for your comments. Nice to know that we do have some wisdom out there. i used to play this game for hours...ok days: American Civil War: The Road from Fort Sumter to Appomattox. I loved it. so mpost likly I will try Civil war 2, which i believe is as close to that game as possible. Thanks again, my Gamers!

I have both. As Mr.Freeze said, they are apples and oranges (or Civ vs Total War). CW2 is based on 2 week turns vs UGCW real time. CW2 is grand stategy vs UGCW more 'tactical'.
If you want Sumpter to Appomatix revived in the modern day Then Civil War 2 is the game for you. I have Both Ultimate Genral Civil War and Ultimate Genral Gettysburg as well however.

If you remember the days of Civil war Generals then think of a RTS version of that and you have Ultimate generals. Both are great games, I would recommend in the future getting ultimate generals at a later date.

No matter how hard I've tried, I just can't grasp Civil War II. Never fails, when I hit END TURN, my whole understanding of the game goes right out the window. I really wish there was an option for the game to pause on battles so I can tell what the hell happens during turn resolution!

Dear Clawless: Here is something you should know, in major battles the out come can be looked at in more detail by looking back at your history. Look to yuour Lower right at the inspection Panel. Click on your stack and you will then see the unit counters. Click on the counters and it will give you in detail the Unit itself, morale, fatigue, etc. Page 17 / 18 is a good start.

Two totally different gaming experiences. Both scratch different itches. If you're a CW buff and/or hardcore wargamer, I'd highly recommend getting both and enjoying what each has to offer.
