To all who cannot launch the game: "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION"
Hello Community,

To those who launch the game and receive this message: "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" without any logo or main menu, try to do that:

Go to Steam Library, for example mine is: "F:\SteamLibrary\SteamApps\common\Crystals of Time", right click on the main exe file and Run it as Administrator.

The problem is that the game saves its data into AppData and the system needs access to that folder.

This doesn't work for me. Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

UPDATE:
I contacted the Devs by an email adress elsewhere. They've been polite, and responsive, and I didn't have to go through a round of "Is the computer turned on?". We've had a couple rounds of back and forth, no solution as yet, but then it's only been 5 hours since I contacted them.

Well, I got the solution on the 15th, but I'm late posting it. Despite being given Administrator privelages with the Antivirus turned off Crystals of Time was failing to create the RVLGames folder in the Roaming folder inside AppData. It was also failing to create the CrystalsOfTime folder inside that. If both those folders don't exist, just like that that can cause the "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" error.

So if you don't have an
C:\Users\MyUniqueUserName\AppData\Roaming\RVLGames\CrystalsOfTime
folder try the solution in the first post, but if that doesn't work, try this and post here.

Aparently I'm the only one with this issue thus far and my guess is it relates to a disk size check on a system disk formatted with a GPT header 3TB or larger. I have a 4TB GPT system drive. Should you use my solution please post here with some details.

I also have the same issues. I have Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I launch the game, goes black, and gives me the "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION"

How interesting Tronka, have you tried looking at the game in your library, right clicking on it and choosing PROPERTIES, click on LOCAL FILES then VERIFY INTEGRITY OF GAME CACHE. After that completes click BROWSE LOCAL FILES. That will show you the game files. Right Click on "Crystals of Time.exe" and select run as administrator. Tell us what happens when you do that.

Also, what is the size of the hard drive you have Windows installed on? Good luck.

Hard drive is 10G. Followed your instructions, verified integrity of game, right clicked and ran as admin. Screen blinked twice and said EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, again

My computer is Windows 7 home Premium

Thanks, normally that would fix many games you're having odd issues with. (plus running any exes in the install folder inside the game folder) You seem a bit new at this, so let me ask you to

1) Click on the start menu, and note your name in the upper right hand corner there. Do not share that here, just write it on a piece of paper for your notes.

2) Click on the start menu to open it again. Right click on computer and choose properties. Report here what it says under "Windows Edition"

3) Also in that window it will say System, then "System Type" report here what it says for system type. Close that window.

4) Open the start menu again, click on computer. There should be an icon near the top left of a disk with the Windows logo on it. Right click on that and choose properties. There will be a blue square that says "Used Space", please report that number. There will be a pink square that says "Free Space", please report that number. Below that it will say "Capacity" please report that number too.

5) Open the Start menu click in the search box type " %appdata% " without the quotes hit Enter on your keyboard

That should open an Explorer window. In the address bar it should say your username from 1) AppData Roaming . Do you see a folder called "RVLGames" without the quotes? If you do open it and tell me what's inside.

If you don't see a folder called "RVLGames" in the roaming folder you have open right click and choose "New Folder" then type "RVLGames" without the quotes. Double click RVLGames to open it. Once you have that open, right click and choose "New Folder" and name it "CrystalsOfTime" without the quotes.

6) Once you've done that try running Crystals of Time from Steam. Post your results here.

7) If it's still not working check you graphics card drivers, in the main Steam window click the Steam menu and "Check for Video Driver Updates" Update your graphics card drivers if there is a newer version available. Verify and attempt to run Crystals of time again.

Good Luck.

I did upgrade the graphic card on steam - which it needed, because whenever I signed on to play Marvel Heros 2015 it said I needed to upgrade, which it now no longer says that.
Restarted my computer, and tried to play Crystals of Time.....same problem EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION. Thanks again

You're welcome. Good job on following directions. Interesting. It looks like you have a different problem than me, and a different problem than Ravi. There's other things one might try, but I have no confidence any of them would lead to a solution. I'm going to see if I can get the developers attention on this thread for you.

I was able to install this game and play it on my Windows XP machine without any problems but wasn't able to play the game on my Windows 7 machine even after following all of the steps listed here.

I was able to make this work on Windows 7 by doing the following.

  1. Launch the game once and received the "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION" error message.
  2. Open the folder %APPDATA%\Roaming\RVLGame\CrystalsOfTime
  3. Created a "profiles.txt" file in that folder.
  4. Opened "settings.txt" changed all values to 0 and saved the file (there should be three lines, each with a number on them).
  5. Changed the Executable for the program to run under Windows XP SP2 compatibility and as an Administrator.

Hopefully this helps anyone who is having problems.
