If you have never played the game before I highly suggest the origonal or the blue sun mod patch for the origonal. Hard life mod is as the name suggests a bit more full on. Once you have got used the game hard life gives a deeper experience.

I prefer Hard Life because it's a bit harder and more limiting, with vehicles, mercenaries (little-to-no freebie option) and weapons... plus gun laws. Granted, the beginning of the game isn't exactly in my own personal tastes (I hate the forced start as rebels aspect). I'd have much rather began as a neutral in a random battle between rebels and government caught in the crossfire, as that way would also allow me a chance to take my pick of semi-decent guns instead of simply "used-up" FAL rifles with highly underpowered 762x51 ammo. That's really my only complaint other than a few glitches here and there for HardLife.

BSM just seemed a little cartoonish by comparison.

High Calibre has tons, and I really mean tons, more guns with the BSM and Mercapolypse mods installed

There's a couple of drawbacks though. On my PC at least it's much more unstable compared to Hard Life. The game crashes like every half an hour when I play. The BSM quests are also just weird from a story standpoint.

Necro time for a newbye. Is Hard life THAT more stable? i've just had a situation where a 50+ hour game of mine crashed and corrupted the save destroying all the progress in BSM (no mercapocalypse) And i am very much tired of the constant crashes.

Hi. No it is not more stable. For me it crash less by not using the higher resolution even my rig capability can definitely work that. Cannot run it on Win 10 for me. Kept asking for a dll. file . Some maps in HLA do not load all required parameters properly. Anyway this is the situation for me.

So the basics is that you get another (but IMHO worse) start to the story, more text-based difficulty and weird options, survival options, not compatible with the BSM story or mercapocalypse, and on top of that you still need an official addon download of 1.2gb to get the full hard life experience?

The story is ok for me even though the Player is forced to work for the Rebels from start, some options such as hunger/ability to forage for food via hunting/fishing is doable. The things that makes the game unstable are the maps not loading all params, the day & night cycle when going into the maps are incorrect - just a few example. These are the contributors to the game crashing for me.

To my understanding this HLA is independent from 7.62. From what I read it were from a few mods combined into one. The execution however is a shame. Some of the missions are terribly implemented. Try doing Villarado at CGL 2. It left me speechless. If somehow HLA is reworked again by the makers to iron out the deficiencies. The gameplay & combat is intense. Very tactical too. However these aspects alone cannot cover the defects. How it still being sold is a good mystery. Someone must still be getting income from sales. Yeah there is a possibility that all your saves will be corrupted & the Player will be unable to launch it. Happened to me a few times.

I think the devs sailed ship. Which wouldn't be MUCH of an issue if not because marauder doesn't quite scratch the itch and sometimes it feels HLA creates more issues than what it tries to solve.

PS: Do you know how to use the workshop option with it? I subbed to a bunch of mods but the game doesn't load them

We can rule out HLA devs, it's free. And Apeiron studio, they've been gone for a decade now.

Gotta launch the game from Steam, then you get "Mods" option in the Main menu, enable them there. I don't think stuff like edited NPC/shop inventories will take effect on existing saves, need to start a new game for those.

Never typed they were. This is not free. It comes together when one buy 7.62. Free will mean can download this game without paying for anything. Just this game alone like most free games on Steam. As a buyer feel disappointed because this is a defective product still on the shelf. Least they could do is make sure all combined mods in this game do not conflict with each other & run in tandem. All the modified maps will load everything as intended. Nothing fancy just make sure it is not defective. As stated someone/company/corporation still taking proceeds from sale. To these entities please be proud of your achievement - The ability to sell defective goods without care. Karma will bite you back as usual.

Can't find it in the workshop. At store page can't download just HLA alone without paying for 7.62. On Steam free game will be tagged as free. Simply download it & play. No need to pay. It is a 2+1.
