For me, the ending raises a more important question: if Majima knew about the treasure and arranges for Shigaki to head to Nele with the intent to organize a search, why does Shigaki freak out at the prospect of Majima and Saejima arriving? After all, in this scenario, they already know about the secret.
That being said, I think RGG really did shoot itself in the foot in two ways over the years.
1. Having such large time gaps between games, namely excused by prison time for both Kiryu and Ichiban. Kiryu's 10 years in prison really didn't mean much to the overall plot. The stuff that went down during that time could have happened over 2 years or less and it would still be believable because it really only detailed his sworn-brother's turn to a heel.
Yakuza 1 could have shown Kiryu as a 18 year old and by the time of Yakuza 6 he would be 38. By Yakuza 5, he could be about 35 and Haruka would be old enough to still do her idol-thing.
This would keep Kiryu as the MC for a much longer time and still give Ichiban his time to shine as well.
2. Giving Kiryu cancer. I think it's needless. It really serves no purpose at all. If they wanted to move on from Kiryu, they could write-in him living somewhere near Haruka peacefully.
That's not the plot hole, Shigaki was already there, Majima just came "to babysit" them, which he didn't want to do, until he found the legends. The plot hole is that Saejima knew about this reason, but is completely clueless about it when he shows up.
Apparently it's because the main game and post credits scene had different writers.
No matter how old he gets, he's carrying the franchise. He's the face of Yakuza. There was an overall resounding positive feedback from the community. Even with the "cancer spin", this game and the elixir would give Kiryu a "2nd new chance" or rebirth if you will. My gut feeling says that RGS will not entirely cut off Kiryu out for now because there's still a lot of opportunity.
Even if the Yakuza setting is fully milked and dried out, there are plenty of story opportunities beyond. Politics and corruption, military industrial complex, foreign and domestic agents, Japanese cult etc.
On the sidenote, I'd love to play as Akiyama in a main game again. Regardless of any speculation and theories - looking forward to the next RGS game ^^.
