Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii

Does this game have anything to do with the main series?
I'm playing Gaiden next because it's the next game after 7. Does this game relate to 8 at all? Or is it a straight spin off like Ishin?

Yes, it is. The english naming might mislead people who barely know anything about this series, like most who commented, but this is a standalone add-on to Like a Dragon 8, same as The Man Who Erased his Name was to 7.

We obviously know nothing about Like a Dragon 9 yet, but anyone who played The Man Who Erased His name can tell you that the game introduced vital characters and plot for Yakuza 8.

TLDR: Pirate Yakuza is Infinite Wealth 8.5, a continuation of a mainline title and not an unrelated spinoff.

Nope, Like a Dragon is its own new series.

Some of the same cast, but not narrative connection to the original Yakuza games.

Thank you. This helps.

I'm only 2 hours in and the story is very clearly connected to Infinite Wealth. Whether or not you need to play Infinite Wealth before this, I can't say for sure.

It does spoil some of Infinite Wealth's late-game plot points super hard.

Huh? Like a Dragon is the original name of the series not Yakuza.

It isn't. The series has always been called 'Like a Dragon' in Japan.

You're right, I'd forgotten how late on in IW this stuff is revealed. I would play IW before this.

Like a Dragon was the original Japanese name, but the series was release in the west as just Yakuza. RGG decided to go back to it's original name with Like a Dragon: Yakuza and subsequent titles.

Ryuu Ga Gotoku - is Like a Dragon which was the original official title in Japan, the west named it Yakuza.

Wrong, Yakuza was the western name for Ryu Ga Gotoku until 2020. Stop spreading misinformation

Makes me wonder if this the way the series is going to be from here on.

Long turn based jrpg, then shorter action game follow up, then long jrpg, then action and so on. So LAD 9 will be turn based.

I think it was obvious that he meant that the game called Like a Dragon in the West is a different story with a different protagonist from the Yakuza saga, even if it has references to the main saga by Kiryu. Gaiden could even be considered a spin off of Ichiban's Like a Dragon, and in fact it was going to be a DLC.

You have to understand that the one confusing people is you saying that because anyone who came to the franchise for the first time won't know that Yakuza and Like a Dragon have two different main protagonists and, except for Gaiden, the Ichiban ones are turn-based JRPGs.

The Yakuza saga is not JRPG and follows a story through Kiryu that is sustained over time from 0 to 6.
The Like a Dragon saga, in the west, follows a story through Ichiban that is not related to Kiryu's life except for flashbacks here and there as a farewell to the character.

What it is called in Japan is indifferent in this case. It's like saying that the name of the company is the same as the name of the game. As a curiosity it's fine, but little more.
