Well no. Its a spin off after all BUT you'll see a lot of chars from older yakuza games which are a spoiler. i'd play Yakuza series before playing this because its worth it.

it's not necessary but you be all out of context with the characters and the setting

Yes.

I would definitely recommend playing 0 and kiwami 1 to find out about how and why majima came to be the character he is now. It's totally understandable if playing 8 mainline games plus countless spin offs is too much. But those 2 games are kind of essential for setting up majima, since he is the protagonist of this new game. Maybe read/watch a re-cap of lad 8 since this game will take place after that one.

I suppose it's not necesary to understand the plot of the game itself but it will be nice to understand all the references they will include in it.

we strongly advise you to at least play Yakuza 0 first.

Not entirely. I think the game series does a good job catching up on key plot-points. You can also use YT explaining the lore, wiki or other resources if you're interested. The other games are great, but I fully understand people with money constrictions or time limitations. The game series is long and a few decades old at this point.

no. i jumped in with ichiban's first game: Like a Dragon. I played the spin-off between that and the recent sequel for Ichiban and a little bit of Ishin on Game Pass and that's it. i'm pretty excited for this and don't need to know anything about the main character or who he was before this. especially seeing he lost his memory at the start of the game, so they're obviously going to use this game to introduce new fans to him while likely also offering more for old fans who will catch the hints and easter eggs everyone else won't notice.

In all seriousness, playing 8 should be enough, but then to truly enjoy 8, you should play 7... and to know some characters in 7, you should play Kiryu's saga... but nah, 8 is set in Hawaii, just like this one (which is 8 gaiden)
