It uses the newer version of Dragon Engine that Gaiden and IW use. Unreal was only used for Ishin.

The Dragon Engine was created to simulate the lights and neons in Kamurocho (Shinjuku irl name), as there were none in feudal Japan, so Unreal Engine was used

I hope not. The team isn't well practiced with UE, and have far more expertise in their own engine, not to mention how their engine is specialised for the series.

I know this is an old post but dear god i hope no game ever uses the unreal engine at this point, as per their terms of use you are greatly creatively limited in what you are allowed to include when making a game in unreal now.

Tbf, the post you're replying to is also wrong in so many other ways too though, cause unreal was not chosen at all because of it being feudal Japan. They simply wanted to test whether Unreal would work for them instead of making their own new engine to follow the dragon engine.
