New Gunbound

New Gunbound

It has potential...
I played the original Gunbound back in the early 2000's. It was really REALLY fun up until they allowed you to buy items with real money and made it pay-to-win. After that the game died tragically.

But I stumbled upon this New Gunbound and found my way to the Latin version of the game. Unfortunately, there were no games active. But I did play around with the mini games a bit. It controls as expected. Like the original. Moving around with the arrow keys (wish it was WASD) press and hold space to fire, etc. There wasn't much I could do with the one mobile available to me with the rest locked (having to be earned) but I could tell that this could possibly a great renaissance for the game and its following if the developers treat it right.

Now, as I understand it, the game was delayed from June to July due to COVID-19. We are now in August with no word on the status of development. I looked around and I didn't see word on it being cancelled or anything. Given the state of the world right now it's hard to tell what's become of the game. (My home state is on fire right now.) But one could speculate that this Latin version of the game isn't complete yet. Which sounds obvious given that they're still in beta. Reason I mention it is that I read some other threads on here saying that the game is "trash." And when I played the game I thought, "well, of course it is. It doesn't seem done yet." It has potential! I mean, so long as they don't bring back a pay-to-win model of playing this can be really awesome! I really hope we hear from Softnyx soon. I'm honestly kind of excited to see this game possibly making a comeback. Here's hoping.

EDIT:

ACTUALLY! I gave it another shot but this time I managed to play a game with someone. And I won! :) It's pretty much the same game with updated graphics. Even the sound track is the same. Which I actually liked cause the soundtrack I found rather soothing back in the day. But I can understand if people look at that as something that was in need of evolving. I gave the shop a closer look. The good news (in my opinion) is that the avatar items don't affect your status it as it did in the original. This means no pay-to-win which is a sweet relief. There is an EXP system but I haven't played enough to see how this affects my character. The servers are divided by level and I'm only allowed in the bottom tier server until I can level up. This is arrangement of servers is OK but the drawback is if you're playing with friends and they fall behind in leveling then you'd have to wait for them to level up so you can join them again. That kind of sucks but not a deal breaker. One of the cons so far is that there isn't that many items to get. The shop is rather small but could grown upon release on Steam. Another con is that you RENT items. Not buy them. You can rent them for a day, a week or a month. Now THIS might be where the cash grab accusation could come into play. If you're desperate to keep your items for another 30 days you'll pay for some Softnyx Cash to use on rubies in-game so you can rent them again. You don't HAVE TO but you can. As far as I can tell, gold and rubies are earnable in-game. (Gold through battles and rubies through playtime rewards where the longer you play the more rewards you get.) It's kind of annoying but maybe they can change that upon release? It makes no sense to rent items in a game that give you no advantage in battle and if that were the case then it'd be pay-to-win and NO ONE wants that. Might as well just let players keep the items indefinitely to a not annoy people.

The game really does have potential. The gameplay is great! Might need some slight smoothening out on the controls but it plays like Gunbound. Just need more maps and items and other incentives to draw players in. I'm down to play it.

I also started playing in LA server, and for now, it feels like a downgrade from the original (except for the lack of pay to win avatars). Now there are exclusive cash consumables, but you can block items in your room.

IMO the ingame UI needs a big improvement. I don't know if they are keeping it simple for crossplataform reasons. I can't see my delay in numbers. The wind and effects bar is cramped together. For some reason my manual force marker seems to change or disappear from time to time, it's weird.

The shop could have permanent items, maybe with gems.
But what annoys me the most is that the mobiles are too damn expensive. You, literally, have to play months to unlock one of them. And you can't even test them in practice mode to see if they fit your game style.

Since they are implementing minigames, it would be nice to have some coop missions.

I played the orginal gunbound too and I saw this just now on steam, I was kinda hyped! Then I remember the pay2win stuff haha. I hope this doesn't follow the same road.

So far, the pay to win aspect doesn't seem to be present. There's really only a few things about it I'm at odds with. Leadz mentioned some above with the UI and the lacking ability of keep your items permanently. The reason the UI is the way it is could be that it's to allow casual gamers an easy entrance to the game. That's just speculation though. One thing to note is that the maps could be bigger in scale. I feel like players end up in close-quarter battles far too often. Also, MORE MUSIC! They're literally using the old OST which I like but it could use some updating. And the bots carrying the boxes fly too low and when you go for a high shot you end up hitting it and it ruins your shot. I feel like you shouldn't have to worry about that.

I'm really hoping that one of the reasons they're delaying release is to address some stuff like this. But no one knows what's happening now cause the devs are keeping everyone in the dark.
