This is a pretty specific, pretty obscure and fairly technical question.

Not sure if there is any way for user's to specify the amount of RAM Steam BTD5 will use. Sure, most modern Windows OSes can actually allow you to specify an application's priority and even CPU core use in multi-core machines, the latter only will show a benefit generally if the game is coded to allow for multi-core use.

For your specific question about increasing RAM usage for Steam BTD5, I would contact NinjaKiwi directly and discuss with them:

support@ninjakiwi.com

Then if you can, post back their response here so you can provide information on this matter to the community at large.

cheers and good luck,

Thanks for the advice, ill keep you posted

Why do you want to use more ram on a single application?

Which has absolutely nothing to do with the question or ram, but fun facts right?

Because I get fps lag at around level 79, despite having 16 gigs of ram. Even though not all of my ram is utilized for this game, only around 25%

On the contrary...it's called "tangentially related" to the OP.

Which your comment above is clearly not.

ctlr alt del, choose task manager, Details, look for bloonstd5 exe, right click it and set priority to High. hope it helps.

Ok ill try that. i still havent heard anything from ninjakiwi yet so sent another email. ill let you know if/when i get a reply
Knifepoint Nov 26, 2015 @ 6:51am
Well Ninjakiwi have not replied so i guess its safe to assume there is no way. increasing priority helps somewhat but still eventually get lag

Hi there, it's not possible to increase the amount of RAM an application uses. RAM is a resource to be used as it is needed by the program. Having more RAM allows you to do more things at once, not do one thing better if you know what I mean.

It's the same story with the CPU, though BTD5 can be given higher priority over other programs (though in reality, this won't have much effect)

Thanks for your reply yer_averagejoe.
I have 16 gigs of ram. the game never uses more than around 25% but i still get fps lag

@Knifepoint:

Yes, avaeragejoe is spot on. I probably should have mentioned something similar in my first reply but that's what happens when you post on forums after drinking too much. :P :)

Let's try and take a look at this from another angle...

You mention you're getting FPS lag...

- approximately when does the FPS lag begin occurring? any rounds in particular?

- can you post screenshots of those times when you start seeing noticeable game lag?

One of the things that makes Steam BTD5 vastly superior to Flash BTD5 is the fact that Steam BTD5 virtually eliminates game lag even in super-duper high rounds like 500, 750, 1000 and beyond. Rounds like that are absolutely impossible to achieve in Flash BTD5. While eventually game lag in Steam BTD5 DOES occur [e.g., it becomes impossible to activate abilities starting around round 600 or so], for the most part, lag doesn't really happen in Steam BTD5.

So, try to share some screenshots here and let's see if we can't get closer to what may be causing your FPS issue.

cheers!

FPS lag is more likely to be caused by a bottleneck in the CPU or graphics card. Put simply, a game needs to be able to do two things really fast: It has to process and update all the objects in the game and it has to render the frame. Both these things need to happen 60 times/second before you experience any lag.

In terms of graphics, BTD5 is actually quite simple, especially for modern day desktop dedicated GPUs - Sometimes mobile integrated GPUs will struggle with BTD5 but on a desktop computer, you can almost be certain the GPU isn't the problem.

So that leaves the CPU. I'm sure you are aware, there can be A LOT going on in BTD5, and the nature of the game doesn't particularly lend itself to being easily parallelised - so even if your CPU has 4 cores, BTD5 is likely using only 25% of that CPU's capabilities at most.

What kind of CPU usage are you seeing when experiencing the lag? and what type of CPU do you have?
