I will upgrade ships soon, too busy balancing colony after the last updates to worry too much about it for now.
Fert and water are major requirements when growing cereals and roots now.
Let them eat seaweed ;)
Once you've done a couple of some food cycles in the botanists farm, let the seed extraction from the botany lab run for a while using this freshly farmed food and you end with thousands of seeds of one type once it's ran for a while. You'll then never need to send our your ships for more seeds unless you want more variety :)
I feed my colonists a mix of seaweed/water/tomato/millet and they have great attributes and have never been happier.

Not all blueprints are available at the market and you need to craft them yourself.
