dna extractor.. what is that for...

can you permnently use the crature killed with that gun , does it send it to your pet store?
this would shortcircuit having to find specific events.

plus, do you need to do the killing blow or just use it on the beast at any time?

When you kill creature with it, you unlock it in pet shop (thus you gain an entry in companions tab in your pokedex) and pet conumable is dropped (item that can be stacked up to 5, each one summons one of that creature; you can have only one pet summoned at a time; using this item unlocks entry in consumables tab).

To gain all above you need to deal final blow with dna extractor (but it seems to me that when you use extractor and your pet immediately perform killing blow it also counts).

But DNA extractor do not work with every creature. Immune are turrets, blight monters, these tough ice creatures. Blight crab pet can be unlocked by event (one with diary I think). Robo dog is unlocked as a pokedex reward and the last one pet must be obtained from event too.
