Downside .. can be very grindy and some long time sinks... growing crops for example is 24hr + depending on what your growing and if you have bees etc growing a tree 4-7 days apparently, getting coal or charcoal .. 3 days . So yeah grindy and time sinks But if you enjoy building base up and deep mechanics very fun.
good first tip is don't just eat everything, check out how food and FEP works and don't let too big of a gap grow between your stats by eating.
Free so give it a try , but do check some tutorial first or you will struggle at start with what to do and not do.
Hope that helps some
On the topic of the 'catch' of free to play. Verified accounts and Subscribed accounts earn more LP, but even if they didn't, new players still wouldn't be able to keep up with 10+ year vets. So like, it's pay to win but you wouldn't win even if it wasn't lol.
This sums it up pretty well.
The catch is you will get treaded on by long time players or die in the first 5 minutes to a boar while trying to figure out how to light a fire.
Enjoy the journey itself.
Here you are the product of the devs sadic game :)
It's a very good game, you don't have to pay at all to enjoy it and reach the end game.
Like others said, others players are the weak spot in many cases.
It's one of the few games that are loved by their developers more than the cash they can grab from it, and it's rare enough to notice it (some example are Hollow Knight, Outerwilds, Stardew Valley, etc...)
>

Yet , that doesn't stop you from posting ♥♥♥♥ on forums.
You pay. One way or another :P
Last world a big group started raiding my base for no reason, they even managed (very likely) to use a bug to destroy my boats and dock, a thing I thought was not possible.
You can play while big factions allow you.
also you kinda need to pay, check the market posts, you need to buy 10 usd tokens to be able to trade with players
I'll say a one-time buy is definitely good enough to support this game for the fun it's given me these years, but you'll NEVER reach endgame by yourself. If the degenerate pvpers get their wish, one of the only peaceful/newbie welcoming factions will never get a foothold again (to be fair some of them were insufferable and deserved a beatdown).
The risk of losing your main is ever-present and sucks the fun of the game completely for me, so i either play on late-game servers which are deserted except for some hermits who are cool, or start early and mostly afk farm until said lategame.
and you kinda need the good q stuff to stay safe, i'm a noob too and I have close to 500 hp now, I believed this was a good amount for now but I just saw I guy from WB be killed with the same amount of hp, looks like people are able to 1 shot you now, my point is that without trading I can't make good q armor and gear, good q food and all those things.
oh sure, you can do bot work and boil 10 stacks of river pearl mussel to get 1 or 2 pearl, by current prices if you gather 200 pearls you can get a good axe.
