"Error Saving Game"

Recently I'm unable to save any progress in the game, and I'm prompted to try to save again. I can load up a save just fine, but I run in to the problem as soon as I move to a new area. Naturally it asks me to pick a save device (probably left over from consoles?), which fails, and I'm forced to continue without saving anymore. Anyone else have this problem?

Sorry you're hitting this issue. The only way you could hit this issue is if for some reason the save file can't be written to. You can try checking out the save file located here:

C:\Users\user_name\AppData\Roaming\Housemarque\Outland\SAVEGAME.DAT

If you're not able to fix this by ensuring the Read Only checkbox on the file is unchecked please email your SAVEGAME.DAT and log.txt to [e-mail] . Thanks.

I figured it out. I tend to back up saves and I had left the "copy" (though it was named the same -"savegame.dat") in the folder. So I went back, removed the copy, moved the original back and it started to work again. Is there any reason this behavior would occur from copying a save and using it?

Yeah that makes sense. You really shouldn't mess with save files within steam's cloud cache. It failed to save likely because the file was not saved by Steam itself. The file will sync for you onto other computers. If you need to migrate it across accounts place the savegame.dat in the appdata path and the game will pick it up (if you don't already have a savegame.dat in cloud cache):

I'm getting a similar issue on Linux.

The game is completely unable to create a save file. When I first launched the game it greeted me with an "Error saving game" message. Pressing the retry button just causes the same message to appear. I can still continue without saving and the game seems to play fine regardless. I just can't save. Which is a pretty big issue if I plan on playing this game. A save file is rather essential.

I don't understand why this is an issue. The game doesn't seem to have a problem writing to the game's directory. It was still able to create a log.txt and settings.cfg file in my ~/.local/share/Housemarque/Outland directory.

I'm playing on Arch Linux, if that's any help. I tried launching the game with the steam runtime enabled and without. I've tried everything I can think of. The game just refuses to create a savegame file.
