I really wish someone would make a similar twin stick shooter to Super Stardust HD for PC. Like I said there are just no others similar to it with a spherical game arena in that way.
Waves only has the slo-mo and bombs as similar, but no weapon upgrades, and it uses a flat arena. It doesnt' ahve a neverending scoring system either as it it capped at a certain number and you can go no higher. Leaderboards in this case are almost pointless other than to be one of the several hundred who got the max.
Geometry Wars 3 has SOME spherical levels, but it isn't as fluid. They use droids to upgrade weapons and you are forced to play a story mode to unlock stuff. I really am not all that fond of the GW3 gameplay and like Waves more as it feels more natural. It's good, but it feels a bit "off" to me at times too and doens't feel as responsive.
The SSHD combo system is great too with the boosting through things and getting that up. Keeping the combo live until you die. I liked the marathon approach to holdign th combos.
I think it could defintiely be improved upon to make it more difficult with adding more planets maybe and even more weapons that work on more enemies/rocks. Like add in a 4th weapon and rock type, or even 5 if you add in 2 more planets!
I honestly don't think you should change the gameplay style at all either if you make a newer version. Just make it LONGER and a tad more difficult. I loved the style of this shooter and want something more like it. It doesn't need to be completely revamped imo to try and make it new and different. If it isn't broke don't fix it. Spherical game grid, upgradeable weapons, boost with combos, bombs, and more planets. A few new game modes to play around and test with of course, but keep that CORE style and mechanics and just change the enemies and looks some with new bosses.
I assume you can't use the Super Stardust name anymore, but considering you are making something new with a different name that is no problem. I know the Twin Stick shooter genre isn't the biggest seller ever, but the really good ones like that I assume will do fine on PC. After all stuff like Geometry Wars and Waves have done well. Not to mention we have things like Binding of Isaac that are twin stick shooters too in a different style. Word of mouth spreads WAY better on PC due to better community setups in places like Steam compared to the consoles. Plus you can get the word out more with Bundles, coupons, trading cards, etc. You have to build up a loyal customer base on PC though. SUPPORT with the community goes a really long way on PC. Even more than on consoles.
