Combining weapons needs mana and that is the main use of mana, reviving characters also use mana but not that much.

Just play the game ? you need granny unit to combine weapons. All of facility will be unlocked in chapter 8.

slight correction in the wording used:
BY THE TIME you reach chapter 8, everything will be unlocked. They will unlock function gradually over the course of the story alongside character classes.
all you need is ONE of the relevant unit created and present on your island.
like the merchant for the shop access, fighter for the skill learning menu. etc.
