Why lore matters | Dev Blog #6

When we thought about the games production, it was clear, that we wouldn’t integrate a classical story players could follow, so we didn’t pay much attention to world building in the first place.

One could argue that we shouldn’t spend any time in developing background information since the player would never really get to see it, but as the graphical development went further we quickly realized, that we had to answer at least some basic questions like:

Who are our characters and what are their goals?
What is the world like?
What time are we in?
What is the motivation behind the hacking?
Which mood do we want to create?
Is it more fantasy or sci-fi?

What was the point of that?

The answers to those questions had direct impact on our decisions in terms of Art Style, lighting, music, character creation, level design, etc. This gave us the opportunity to follow a common goal and helped us creating a consistent game. Even if there wouldn’t be a story, we wanted to present as much hints as possible so that the player has the chance to guess what’s going on and understand what our thoughts were.

Practical example:

We liked the idea that Net.Attack()s world faces a cyber war in which the player tries to steal data from different countries. This led to the level selection being a world map and we wanted to give each of those regions a unique character that influences the visuals of the abstract circuit board levels.

In fact, each of them has its own little profile with researched reference pictures and descriptions for motivation, believe, living circumstances, geography and form of society.

A valuable investment

From being in production phase it’s clear that spending enough time in world building was definitely an important part in our pre-production and made conception so much easier. For our game it’s the best way to give players some context and a meaning for the gameplay.

Hey guys,

we follow your posts closely and since you reported some very annoying bugs, it’s time for a little hot fix update. This should solve some of the main issues and we also added latest features we are working on.

Changes:

Overclock mechanic iteration
Bug fixes
New DPS Overview in HUD

That buttons gonna be a UX failure! DevBlog #5

When it comes to concepts for buttons in a game there are some essential requirements that have to be fullfilled. They need to be easy recognizable, follow a consistent style and do what the player assumes.

Net.Attack()'s style for UI was created to be mostly filigree, subtle and elegant. As it is supposed to represent a coding game, it concentrates on using text where possible rather than icons. So I came up with the idea of using only text for most buttons: no frames, huge clickable areas or fancy icons.

That’s when the struggle started:

There were questions like: Do we really want this to have no frame? Don’t we want to colour the background? Are we sure this has to be that small, nobody will notice?! But we decided to give it a try and believed it could work.

What we are talking about:

This is an example of the final button design:

The goal was to establish a uniform sign language for everything that functions as a button. Therefore we used underline, brackets at every end and points to seperate different words if namings got too long to be read clearly in pascal case. We wanted it to resemble a sort of text hyperlink style.

The game’s user interface has kind of a green, blue and purple look, which are perceived as “cold colours”. So for the buttons we wanted to choose a dedicated “warm” colour to build a contrast and really pop out.

Apart from the actual design we used the context the buttons are put in to communicate their function. Players are used to navigating through main menus and in our case desktop interfaces. They are expecting buttons like “play” and having this in mind we taught them what our ones look like.

And now? Was it a UX failure?

I’m glad to answer: “No, it wasn’t!” We had a couple of player testings that prooved that the design got the job done. Far better than some of us expected. It seemed to be a risky decision but ended up perfectly.

Devil1976 / Character Difficulties

I have two character unlocked after finishing the first two missions, Hop and Zusel, with these characters Devil1976 seems impossible with the amount of enemy spawns, I have tried it over 10 times and die after the 3rd / 4th area. It seems to me one of two things would help with this, 1. could do less enemy spawns. But I dont really like that option 2. Buff these characters by giving them faster attacks / better chance at getting their specials in the shop, so ForeachInRange() for Hop and larger DamageIn...

Self-executing tryCatch infinite loop is problematic for the game.

Just had a run where i got 2 copies of throwException. So i made tryCatch execute one on Try. And put a split on Catch. The split starts a massive chain of pings and AoE attacks. As well as doing a throwException. Which, you guessed it! instantly executes the very split that caused that catch. I've never beaten a game this hard without *actually* cheating. I don't know any good suggestion to prevent this sadly. It seems too op of a possibility though....

Fully automatable? 👀

Can we fully automate the game? So that we do not play the game manually, but everything is automated with code ? That would be EPIC! 🤩 It would also feel more rewarding than just "coding" our own abilities. If I have to steer the character, and just fire a few custom abilities, that's meeeh... But if I get to "write" the entire logic, and then just hit "play" and the character purely runs on my instructions, playing the game itself, that would be EPIC! I guess you could even do both:...

Resolution setting does not function

I play games in a window smaller than my screen. This game is full screen size even as windowed (I can't reach the lower buttons anymore either) Changing resolution does not affect the window size. As a result, I can't really play.
