Too Hard to be Fun
Two shots from the first pirates encountered just beyond London. Two. And under the waves I go.

I most likely wont go back. At least not until this game is in its final stage.

At this point, the game is simply harder than it is fun. Love the exploration. The big, empty world. Really enjoy the music and atmosphere. But the difficulty is astonishing.

Also, really...I miss the turn based, card based combat. It was much more relaxing than this impossible real time stuff.

Avoid the pirate pinnace while you discover the combat system. It is fairly easy to sink her when you get the hang of it though, try the crabs to the south instead. Approach with light off until you can fire, and then ... fire.

Thanks for the info! Will give it a shot.

Yeah, I've found it can be ridiculously easy to get some of the smaller hostile things if you just boat up with your lights off. That Pirate Pinnace usually putters around trying to figure out where the shot came from and I can sink it no problem.

But then, you have to deal with being at sea, in the dark...

can also get close and hit S to go in reverse with them chasing you after your first salvo. 2nd salvo should sink them

I thought I'd have problems too, when I first tried this new battle system, but as previously stated it is almost embarrasingly easy once you get the hang of it. Also, once you get the slightly better weapons most things won't be able to get in fireing range =(

You good folks were right; the combat is easier once you get the hang of it. Now sinking the early pirate ships with ease - and making good echoes therefrom.

Just wish fuel and supplies were used at a slightly slower rate. Pretty much the only thing a person can do early is ferry to the tomb colonies...

Pass a decently mapped chart as a legacy and farm Admiral runs early on

Currently, the game is being balanced, and terror don't raise fast, while your light is sucking up too much fuel. So do 10 or so Tomb colonists run with light off and you should have enough money to explore and find the Salt Lions. Once you get there, money!!

I was astonished that people do the tomb colonists run. I've never visited Venderbright just for the tombcolonists. I always explore, explore further and further, gather the strategic informations and things. And I can ALWAYS afford my trips. Maybe it's not efficient enough? But tomb colonists run seems too boring for me. Or maybe it's me don't want to see the endings anytime soon...

Yup, the only reason why I haul 'shrooms and colonists is if I happen to go that way. It earns me pocket money and the bulk of my early game earnings came from reports, admiralty assignments and bits & pieces I found during events.

As folk have said in this thread, there are ways to deal with pinnaces. But the early enemies are a bit of a nasty surprise for starting players, it's true. Watch for the next combat balance patch...

The combat balance and gameplay is the onyl key for me to consider this game.

Pro tip: It's ok to evade enemies and run from them early on in the game.

Please open up (diversify) the early game trades.
