[Spoiler / Bug] When you've founded your colony...
I took the option to join the Presbyterate, succeeded and recieved a Trophy: folded flag to end my career.

It's not a legacy item, and there doesn't appear to be any record of it in my study / lodgings.

Is it supposed to exist anywhere?

As an aside, I unlocked the "past wreathed in shadows" achievement. Looking at the stats, there's not many of us!

I founded my kingdom independently, and a certain past can give you quite an edge depending on what you plan to do, so I don't use a past wreathed in shadows very often.
The flag doesn't appear to have any use yet?

edit--- "I only have I am the Captain of my Soul" I might try a no past run. what would be the fastest, easiest ambition to complete, I wonder....

The flag doesn't exist - you get that item when you declare independence, but it doesn't carry over.

Depending on the location of Aestival, it's probably the easiest ambition - mine was one square east of Khan, making ferrying crew / supplies extremely easy & quick. I brute forced it, the total cost was about 18k (includes buying treasures / coffee etc).

After obtaining the item i needed to take care of the sun, I wasn't able to progress the story any further. Am I missing a step? Or does finishing The Zong of the Zee block me from any other ambition?

Zong of the Zee won't block anything, I assume you did NOT use the Parabox? for some reason Dawns law does not set the value "Kingdom: Founded" "Although it sets "Objective: Kingdom = 2" like the Parabox, maybe that's the problem?

I'm fairly sure you have to choose the option at Aestival first, just obtaining the parabox isn't a trigger.

>Choose option at Aestival
>Obtain parabox
>Use parabox on Aestival
>Colony tab opens (it's separate to the story tab)

I got the starting quest to found the kingdom, then just happened upon finding the parabox. I went back to Aestival with the box and there was nothing but beach-combing and supplies gathering for me. I don't remember if I tried using the box from my hold while docked there.

Nope, it's 100% a story event.

Sounds like a bug - or Zong of the Zea does indeed lock other ambitions out.

I only need to take the Parabox to the island? There's nothing else I need to have with me? Sucks if it's a bug and I lost all those stats for nothing, but I've been thinking about retiring this captian and starting anew with my scion anyway.

Yes - x10 supplies.

Looks like a bug with the Objective: Kingdom = 2 (=1 is required for the unlock).

Went back, made sure I had at least 10 supplies and the option to found the kingdom was there. I've used Aestival to get supplies in the past, but I'd leave as soon as I had used the storylet. Didn't think the option to found the kingdom wouldn't be listed at all until you had the box and supplies. Usually the option is listed, but you can't select it until you have everything. Thank you, Boink.

No probs - the positive is that there's no bug :)

(Well, apart from my mysterious folded flag.

There are only two options for Past Wreathed in Shadows, and both are pretty hard. Kingdom is probably easier than Exaltation, though.

To politely disagree: founding a colony isn't hard, it just requires a lot of echoes.

As stated - if you have Khan nearby, it gives all of the elements required (crew, vital secrets, captivating treasures) barring coffee (which is a one off 10 splurge).

It costs around 18k - which is less than a 40 box sunlight run (40 boxes = 202 menaces, capping the limit).
