Kubla Khan
This game and poem share some similarities, anyone know if there's a direct link between it and the Khanate?
"In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea
...
But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e’er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
...
Through wood and dale the sacred river ran,
Then reached the caverns measureless to man,
And sank in tumult to a lifeless ocean;
"

Simple answer: yes, of course there is.

TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?

In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?

Sunless Sea is notable for the literary references and American English illuminati getting their Victorianna in a twist.

An interesting thread would pare up the occult / literary references with their namesakes in reality, wouldn't that be a thing? Dreamsnakes and Tigers, mirrors and memories, fecund symbiosis and dessicated decay. And all that focus on cannibalism, oh dear. Predators should never feel guilty when eating...

SHINE WHERE THOU WILT AN THOU HARM NONE

There's something a little.. Crowley about this. A thousand points of light and all that. One Happy Family where We All Succeed. Nudge nudge, wink, wink.

Too bad that old world is gone now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extinction_debt

When stunned, sometimes it is because history repeats itself and claims victory; the curse of modernism and ignorance, shouting and dissonance claiming to be powers, rather than anything else...

THE STARS are old, that stood for me—
The West a little worn,
Yet newer glows the only Gold
I ever cared to earn—
Presuming on that lone result
Her infinite disdain,
But vanquished her with my defeat,
’T was Victory was slain.

It's a strange world where you can cast in binary. Strange, but wondrous.

Oh, and a future, since we always do things in threes. If you're a smart puppy, you'll grasp the theme, if not, no worries - a Steam forum, a cultural forum, where memes play:

Gully Foyle is my name
And Terra is my nation
Deep space is my dwelling place
The stars my destination

TL;DR

Yes, have fun with it, but be careful. There's always Lions, Tigers and Bears out there.

Very interesting, I love the depth of each little reference they insert, it creates a fantastic atmosphere.

The rabbit hole is very deep, there's centuries at play. Have fun, but remember: nothing is as it appears.

And the above post wasn't necessarily for you.

Slightly more relevant link:

The story of the Fourth City, and how it fell.

Disclaimer: The last time I played The Silver Tree, which was years ago, it was very grindy, and I didn't get far.
