Other games that play like this?
Enjoying this - what are some similar games? The realtime exploring and combat, plus story and the "town" part?

The Curious Expedition is kind of like Sunless Sea, but much less dark. There's also a game in the works called A House of Many Doors which is almost identical to SS. However, it's still being developed. The demo can be downloaded for free though.

Also, without the real time combat and all of that, there is, of course, Fallen London.

You could try Darkest Dungeon, quite different gameplay but game feeling is the same.

I play DD too and enjoy it a lot, but where Sunless Sea is all about the story, Darkest Dungeon has next to no story. Just a disclaimer.

And madness. Plenty of Madness.

Keep 'em coming, guys. Pretty sure I own Darkest Dungeon (from a bundle?), so I'll install it and fire it up.

Thanks!

Sun Dogs is also quite similar. There is no combat, though, only explorations and random events, and its minimalistic graphic style may not be for everyone.

Space rangers. It's not text-oriented like sunless sea but it does have text adventure missions.

God i'm excited for the house of many doors. The description sounds amazing.

I helped Kickstart House of Many Doors - the art and design and writing (and miles of procedurally generated "bad" poetry) are all making me verrrrrry excited.

FTL (without this dark an atmosphere) is like Sunless Sea. Less literature more optimization. If you want to try it, use it with this mod http://www.ftlgame.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15663

I am definitely feeling the love from the Sunless Sea community! Keep 'em coming!

Games that I have now installed and queued up to play an hour of, and see what I think:

Convoy
Dungeon of the Endless
FTL
Space Pirates and Zombies
Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space

This is an okay mod if you get tired of the original, but it is really inferior in a number of respects to vanilla AE. It has ridiculous featuritis and is more a kitchen sink mod that just throws in a bunch of ideas people thought of without any concern for balance.

FTL is much more combat focused than Sunless Sea, but they're similar in that you're a captain controlling a ship on its way through a dangerous, enemy filled area. It's more quest-oriented, though, in that you're always trying to do the same thing: get to the enemy flagship and destroy it.

Also, playthroughs are usually more like 1-3 hours than the dozens of hours an SS playthrough is.

There's also much less text and atmosphere to it.

It's easily the best game of its sort, though.

Space Pirates and Zombies is something I've put a lot of time into and is definately worth a shot. Same feel as this game.

Can't go without mentioning Sid Meier's Pirates!, especially the 2004 remake. Completely different setting and a much lighter tone, of course, but it's got SS's naval exploration and ship combat on a 2D map, stories and trading in ports, and a story quest that your character can choose to follow while still letting you do whatever you want.
