Light spends more fuel than engines
Why on earth they would do that ? This is counter-intuitive and feels like a noob trap by design. Design aside, this just feels ridiculous. So the flashlight on the ship burns more coal than the engine that pushes a dozen tons forward ?

is certainly weird, i've taken to sailing around with the lights off... sure terror goes up faster but even around 80% its manageable.

Yes, but only because the starter engine is extremely fuel efficient. Every other engine consumes fuel faster than the lamp.

That only means that the game has only one engine, and this sucks as far as game design goes. Why even have this dumb darkest dungeon masochism simulator in a game about story delivery. Plus its yet another backwards game design where early game is the most difficult, because lets face it, most early game deaths are because of fuel or supply or economy loss, not because MrKrabs rammed your ship x20 times while you were afk.

Starting engine is efficient yes, other engines have worse efficiency but more power so you go faster. You'll burn more fuel but going faster should lower supplies used and terror gained by spending less time traveling. Trade fuel spent for more speed. I believe the bigger ships are also inherently slower. Mostly just about finding efficient routes and learning where best to stock up on fuel and supplies to cut down on costs.

Early game is really rough I agree. You start off with very tight margins and a slow ass ship and have to eke out some early money. Personally prefer playing the game with manual saves instead of roguelike mode so if you screw up something you can roll back to last to a previous save state. Don't really want to have to redo all the islands stories.

You could argue there are 3 engines at least.
The two storyline reward ones are good too.
But as chris said, since fuel can be bought super cheap near London, if you can save on supplies by consuming more fuel it can be a good trade.

getting the 300 weight ship does anything to the max speed ? Seeing as that is x3 lighter than starter ship.

The issue with that ship is that it has a weak hull and low cargo capacity, but yes, it moves a little faster and where it excels is when it is equipped with clay men. You only end up needing one crew member so you hardly ever go through supplies. If you equip the clay men and use Maybe's Daughter with the Boadicea engine you can get a LOT of travel efficiency out of it. It would be best to use it to clear the map, running tomb colonists, or Mr. Sacks' quest.

Sounds like the best ship for story, combat is out of picture early anyway.
Why Boadicea engine ? It seems to just give power, no efficiency.

Lots of stories require cargo space so...

The other side to how much fuel the lamp burns is you aren't supposed to be able to run it all the time, doing so trivialises Terror. Learning when to leave it off and when to switch it on for maximum benefit is part of mastering the game. (Of course there's another reason not to have it on, namely that it makes you stand out to Zee horrors.)

Because it gives more power without it being a ridiculous amount. Power increases fuel consumption linearly but not speed.

so its best to keep engine power close to weight ?
Ragnaman Feb 8, 2024 @ 3:51pm
Paying currency to reduce tedium, flawed design.
Light usage to hide from or reveal enemies, that at least makes sense.
Light spending fuel is fine, but not when it spends it more than freaking engines.
Later when you are rich you care less about light spending fuel, which is yet another flaw (early game being harder than later game).

So early game this feature adds tedium and late game this feature might as well not exist :emofdr:

I think early game being rougher is common in survival/roguelike games.
Sunless Skies is a lot easier in that aspect. Money is quicker to accumulate early on so it's less stressful to start going,

There is a guy that posted an in depth statistical analysis of all the engines and their benefits versus cost. He put a ton of time and research into it. He's got actual empirical data to back up that the only engine that would really be worth buying would be the Boadicea. In my personal opinion, completing the tireless mechanic storyline and getting the Fulgent Impeller is absolutely the way to go. It's far and away the best engine in the game.

How do you even get clay men ? I only found the pack of 6 for delivery to London and the Auxiliary item.
