Pigmote Islands Fate (SPOILER)
So despite having a decent score for Pigmote Island in the three categories (civilisation, might and spirit), the die roll in their War for Independence screwed me over and the place was burned to the ground.

So I kinda want to know, why can't I help out in their independence war and, failing that, why can't I cathartically bomb the Fathomking's Hold (suicidal I know) and Visage (not so bad), the nations that instigated Pigmote's downfall. At this point I don't even care about ramifications I just want to avenge my fluffy friends.

Why should you? The entire time you were sort of an advisor who comes and goes, there's no real connection between the captain and the island inhabitants. Even so, as they explicitly tell you, they can't rely on your wisdom forever - they either establish themselves as a nation that is able to defend itself, or they succumb to invaders. It's impossible to always rely on a third-party helper such as yourself, considering that most of the time you're in the zee, exploring some remote lands.

From that point of view, avenging them makes no sense to the captain. Neither Fathom King nor Visage have a grudge against you, it's pure politics between them and the new nation of Pigmote. A fate of individuals is not something that's put under consideration.

Yeah, I kinda understand not helping them in the war, for the reasons that you state. But as it happens, for roleplaying purposes as much as anything, I would want to slap both Visage and the Fathomking in the face and suffer the consequences - and as for a game such as Sunless Sea in which a significant part of the game is dealing with consequences of actions, it should be my decision to perform at least some kind of hostile action to Visage or the Fathomking and accept whatever (and it will most likely be bad) reprisals I face after.

First of all, the Fathomking is important to the ambition of Finding Your Father's Bones. Second, you can definately help Pigmote with their Independence. It's just more difficult. Do the research sir. Not trying to type all the outcomes and stuff. It's a great story. Especially because before it was basicaly a glorified rest stop lol

Unfortunetly, you cannot avenge them since neither King of drownies or Visage has any ships you could destroy. That's sad because fluffy nation is best thing that happend to Zee. However if you really want to anger Fanthom King you can give him two things - heart and a weapon from Iron Republic. He won't be happy about it. Unfortunetly, there's no way to avenge them, as devs still didn't add storyline called "Burn visage down and let nobody speaks about it ever again", but I really hope it'll come some day.

You can deface the holy site on Visage.

For guaranteed Independence you need 17 points of Pigmote Isle: Civilization + Might. Spirit also contributes, but it's a dice roll, so better not count on it.

Not easy, but very doable. You have to be really play the Dilemmas strategically. I was able to do it twice in 3 games.

But the point is: what for? Is Independence worth it? The first time I did it I was very excited, then later in that game I realized an independent Pigmote Isle is quite lame. An alliance with the Fathomking proved much more useful ;)

A hint: regardless of who you choose, aim for high Civilization. Cheap Scintillack (or Hull Repairs) are nice :)

The point is, even if you're doing everything "right", saving Pigmote Isle is... random. Yep. You need total points of Civ+Might+Spirit = 17 (or 21). BUT Spirit is being taken from 1 to your actual value. So it's dice roll at the end.
MestreLion Apr 7, 2016 @ 3:40am
Not really... if you manage to get 16 from Civilization + Might you're *guaranteed* to succeed in Independence, no matter how the Spirit dice rolls. So if you do everything *right* the randomness is out of the equation.

Woop, maybe they've changed it, i remember it being 21 in total (which is not possible to achieve just by might and civ, in case it's 17, then it's really possible since you have like 8? events?

Point is story. Not everyone doing everything to maximaze their profits - I for example helped them achieve independence for the sake of story and role play. Those small rodnets, creatures that steal ship from London with DREAM of freedom, DREAM of not being used by humans anymore. This is romantic story, it's not about money, it's about HOPE. That's why I want to help them. Visage and Fathomking (I've never liked this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥) can sail east together and disapear from Zee forever. Fluffy nation!

No matter what the target number is, you still have to rely on luck to raise the stats in the first place; some of the random events you can get have no possible positive outcomes (regardless of your stats or decisions), so if you get unlucky you will have no opportunities to raise civilization or might above their starting values anyway.

So, yes, it requires luck.

Hello. Just wanna throw my opinion in here. Some guy above asked if independence is worth it. Yea it is. In my gameplay i picked the hamsters to start off with (helped with the merchant quests in London). Now they are independent, and they sell their gems for 55 (got civilization to 10 max), and London buys 'em for 70. Pigmote Island is not far from London. This means a pretty nice profit for the lazy player. ;)
