Missable ? Also endless mode?
I wonder if there any missable events? And I heard you can put the option for an endless mode, I know it's a roguelike but it's pretty immersive and I don't want to start over.

Endless Mode? Not sure what you mean. You can turn on Merciful Mode, but you'll still need to make two save files to make sure it's all good. And as for missable events, indeed there's a lot you can miss. That's where the replay value comes in. Depending on your choices there are different outcomes. Sometimes you'll miss something all together.
I just don't want to miss meeting a new civilisation since I really like the lore.

Merciful mode just means manual saving. You can always choose not to reload when you die (and you should at least once to unlock the Labyrinth of Tigers), to try different options in the game's various stories.
Psyringe Mar 18, 2016 @ 2:42am
If you never star over, you'll only experience about 30% of the game. You will meet every civilization, but each of the stories can take different paths, depending on your decisions. Trying different approaches to the stories was, for me, actually one of the incentives to keep playing the game after a captain had died. "Okay Cavia, last time may advice destroyed your kingdom, but this time we'll get it right ...!" ;)

Starting over also gives your new captain bonuses, and allows you to carry over something from the old captain. Once you understand how legacies work, and how to make quick money in the early game, it's not a huge setback any more. Unfortunately there _is_ a lot of repetition and retracing of steps before you reach that point, but once you're over the hump, starting a new captain may feel like an opportunity rather than a setback.
godfather101 Mar 19, 2016 @ 7:01am
hmm, and how DO you make quick money in the early game?
Saw a Guide on youtube which said to buy mushroom wine and sell it in Venderbight, but it seems there was a patch which changed that because in London you buy that wine for 21 echoes and sell it in Venderbight for 23 Echoes.
So i gain only 2 echoes.
As in the beginning i do not have much echoes, that seems not the way to make quick money at start.

So, whats now the best thing to make money at the beginning?
LaVidaEsUnCarnaval Mar 19, 2016 @ 11:44am
You are right, it's not easy to make money quick. But there are a few things you can do.

I'm not going to mark this as spoilers, as this is quite basic information, but if anyone wants I will edit my message.

The most important thing is gathering port reports. Do this for every port you visit, and if you are going somewhere in particular, plan your trip so that you dock at every port on the way. When you return to London, the Admiralty will pay you several echoes for each report (between 10 and 50 echoes) and a unit of fuel. If you do this right, you will never need to buy fuel in London.

Also in the Admiralty, ask the Dark-Spectacled Admiral what he needs. He will send you somewhere to retrieve Strategic Information. He will pay you 100 echoes when you return with it.

Doing the Blind Bruiser quests is also profitable. After giving you some fuel and supplies, and after you complete an initial quest, he will every now and then give you 1000 echoes and send you to a random port, to buy a crate of smuggled goods with the 1000 echoes and return to London. Do not spend the 1000 echoes before you get the crate of smuggled goods, or you will be in trouble when you return to London!
If you return to London with the goods, the Blind Bruiser will pay you 200 echoes and some fuel and supplies.
Be careful, since sometimes the Revenue Men will intercept your ship when docking in London, they will force you to pay taxes for the smuggled goods.

Then there's the Merchant Venturer. He will always want 7 of something, and pays very well. Be careful, since sometimes he will want things that are difficult or dangerous to find. Luckily, he will always give you two options.

There's the Salt Lions. These enormous statues are usually not far from London. You can carry Sphinxstone from the Salt Lions to London. You will need to pay 200 echoes up front, and you will need 20 free cargo units in our ship. Taking the sphinxstones to London will pay 500 echoes.

There's the Alarming Scholar, who will pay you for the strange and wonderful objects you will find on your travels across the Zee. Be careful there, since many objects that can be sold to him are hard to find and needed for quests, and the game does not notify you if you sell something irreplaceable.

Of course, completing stories in the Neath is also profitable, but it's not that easy to make money off them, since you are usually paid in objects and not in money.

There are other ways of making money in Sunless Sea, but for a start, and without spoiling anything, this should help you.

Have fun!

hmm, first of all, thanks for the reply and the help.
Some minor spoilers in my answer/question, so beware if you did not play long.

I played sunless sea now for i think 12-15 hours, and some of your tips i already know.
i always get the port report (when it is possible, sometimes a item is needed which i don't have when i'm at the port), but i do not plan a route. Mostly i get a mission (like the one from the blind bruiser or the Admiral) and when i know where i have to go i drive there with my ship, get sometimes some port reports and then drive back.
Sometimes, when i'm in unkown territory i drive into the black to find new ports (and reports, and opportunitys and so on).
I'm now with my 5. Captain.
With my 3rd. i got lucky and bought the House in London town for 1000 Echoes.
I did not got a scion from my romance, i hope that it'll happen soon, because it gets more and more dangerous where i get send.

But mostly my question for quick money was, because i never had enough echoes to buy a new/better ship.
with all my captains i always drove the beginner ship.
Sometimes with a better Deckgun, sometimes even with a slightly better engine,
but never was i able to buy a better ship and equip the fancy stuff (especially Forward or Aft Cannons and such things).

I'll try the Salty Lion thing (when i got enough echos for a run, needed supplies and now i'm nearly broke), but even that does not grant a big enough reward to get a new ship soon.

So, are there other ways to gain fast money?
Oh, and i don't mind spoilers (as long as they stay in early/mid game and don't spoil the end of the game/everything), so every info about making quick money is welcome.

Amd thanks for the help.

Of course, completing stories in the Neath
Completing the story in Visage intelligently is a quick 1000 echoes.

Completing the major questlines in Venderbight and Port Cecil should get you enough for a merchant cruiser, if not quite enough for a Dreadnought, though neither of these are "quick". Also, the Scintillack rewarded in Port Cecil should be taken first to Varchas on the southern coast and converted into Outlandish Artefacts at the Temple.

Taking lots of candles and crew + decent stats to the Mangrove College and exploring the Wisp Ways can reward valuable items, though it's all about luck. Blue Scintillack obtained here should either be kept for use in combat (only need one) or converted in Varchas, rather than being sold in London.

Merchant Venturer quests are a good source of income too, as already mentioned above.

DO NOT:
Complete the story in Varchas before you're ready to retire/end the game.
Give the Scholar 7 Searing Enigmas, with the same caveat.

Once you have the Merchant Cruiser you could try:
* Taking coffee to the Surface;
* Shipping cargo around the Mediterranean (also on the Surface);
* Wine to Godfall, Clay Men to London;
* Buy wine in London Wine -> trade Wine in Empire of Hands for Coffee -> Trade Coffee for Parabola Linen in Irem -> Sell Linen in London, buy more Wine.
* Alternatively, Buy Coffee in Adam's Way, trade Coffee for Linen in Irem, sell Linen in Adam's Way, repeat. Depending on your map this might be a shorter trip, but the profit margin is significantly lower.

The Sunlight trade is also still viable, but you need to be careful to not let Yearning, Burning get too high.

If the places I've named mean nothing to you, then above all else you need to start exploring further and faster. This is the biggest mistake a lot of players make--playing it safe at the start rather than venturing as far as possible.

hmm, as there are some places (and quests) i already started/ended are there questguides for
the Islands you mentioned?
I already tried to google some, as i encountered some new islands and quests, but most of the guides i find are not up to date (some contain even the wrong locations for islands, took me forever to find Mt Palmerstone as in one guide the Mt Palmerstone Island was still beneath Codex and Frostfound Brite), so there seems to be very much change with patches the last 2 years.

Of course i could try to explore on my own (as i did with my first 4 captains who all died ^^) but it is a little bit frustrating to start anew and don't get anywehere near a new boat and also do not solve the quests on the islands right to get most out of it.

I even think that i need a new captain, because i already ended the Quest in Visage and i think only got 200-300 echoes (its a while since i made it but i'm sure i did not get 1000 echoes) out of it.

and thanks for the tips, i'll try some of it.

Steam Guides

Official Sunless Sea Wiki[sunlesssea.gamepedia.com]

The wiki isn't always 100% accurate, and the older steam guides are probably outdated, but between them and your own notes you shouldn't need to google too much.
godfather101 Mar 19, 2016 @ 10:49pm
okay, thanks i'll look in the guides (with a date from this year) and the wiki and hope the infos i get are correct.
Thanks for your help.

Nice tips, Wierin

A couple more things:

You can also buy Red Honey in the Isle of Cats and sell it in London. It costs 600 echoes and sells at the Brass Embassy for 999 echoes, or at the Admiralty for a bit less. It can be intercepted by the Ministry of Public Decency in London. If they catch you, they will force to pay 500 echoes and confiscate the red Honey.

Before you can trade in Red Honey, you have to earn the attention of the Pirate King, and then you have to solve three quests for one of his two associates. A warning: completing the first quest for either of them has a reward of 30 units of cargo. I didn't know that, and at the tima I still had the first ship (with only 40 units of cargo), so I had to throw most of the reward overboard. :-(

You can also deliver Vital Information to the Admiralty in London. This is not explained in the game, and I only found out by reading about it in the forums. It goes like this: when you get a piece of Strategic Information, you don't have to deliver it immediately. Go back to the Admiralty and ask them to send you to the next location.
Once you have two pieces of Strategic Information, you can combine them in the hold of your ship to produce a piece of Vital Intelligence. To combine them you will also need either a "Zee-Ztory", a "Memory of Distant Shores" or a "Moves in the Great Game".

(This is why it's not really a good idea to sell Zee-Ztorys or Memories of Distant Shores to the Alarming Scholar, since they are used for many other purposes).

Vital Intelligence sells at the Admiralty for 350 echoes, and will open access to the Voracious Diplomat, who pays 500 echoes for it. Selling Vital Intelligence to her can have dangerous consequences, so be careful.
godfather101 Mar 19, 2016 @ 11:30pm
uhhh, thanks for the info.
meeh when i think about all the Strategic infos i already sold to the admiral *grmblgnahh*.
I did not sell Zee Storys this time because one time the Venture Merchant wanted Muttersalt and i only found that in wither and it must be bought with zee storys.
also there was a upgrade to the Study in my House which needed zee storys, so i kept them.
Memories of Distant shores, hmm, i think i'll use them to craft Vital Information.

Thanks for the tip.

Half the time you dock in the Cumaean Canal you get a Moves in the Great Game, and the other two items are quite common. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

hmm, and how DO you make quick money in the early game?

My usual start-up procedure for a new captain is this (spoilers following):

- I choose the two legacies that allow me to carry over all the money from the last captain. (Note: This requires the "Scion" achievement - without that achievement, you can only choose one legacy. If you don't have "Scion" yet, prioritize getting it. To get it, carouse in the docks in London until you trigger a random event and find a partner. Start a romance, keep the locket he/she gives you, keep carousing at the docks in London to meet them again. Eventually you'll have an offspring. Give your offspring gifts until you get 25 points, then allow him to go to the zee. If desired, the gifts can be 'farmed' by picking up news in London, exchanging it for a zee-ztory at the light ship to the east, and reading that zee-ztory to your kid.

- I make sure that I never have less than about 15k Echos at any time, so no matter how and why my last captain died, I can always start up the next one like this:

- I immediately buy a will for 100 Echos to ensure the continuation of my lineage

- I buy a merchant cruiser for 7000 Echos, a new engine for 4000 Echos, and some fuel and provisions. (The following strategy _is_ also viable with a 40 unit cargo hold, but with a 120 unit hold it's quicker to get going.)

- I pick up the tomb colonist for Venderbight to trigger his questline, and go there. From Venderbight I go east and potentially south, looking for the salt lions. By paying attention to the log message and my bat, I usually find them quickly.

- At the salt lions, I buy 5x 20 units of stones. These can be sold in London for 30 Echos profit per unit of cargo space, which is amazing. You can only do this trade a few times, that's why I ensure that I can do it with 100 units of stones each time, and not with only 20.

- I commute between London and the salt lions, doing this trade, and exploring the vicinity of London in the process. Each time after selling the stones, I check the "London!" storylet page. If I see the entry about a woman intercepting me and telling me that my contact for the stones trade won't be there, then I know that I can only do one last trade with the stones. That trade may get redirected to areas I have not explored yet, so I postpone that for later. Once I see this message, I do not go back to the salt lions and do not buy more stones

- Instead, I follow the coast south, and buy tons of coffee in Port Carnelian. I then sell that coffee with a huge profit in Vienna. I can usually do this once or twice with a full hold of coffee. There's a strategy to maximize the amount of coffee that you can sell before the store in Vienna closes, but I'm usually too lazy to care. On the way back, I could buy provisions for 5E and sell them at Gaider's Mourn for 20, but the purchasing process is a clickfest, so I usually don't bother.

- I explore further east. Once I find the the Khanate, I buy 15-20 mirror boxes, go back to the surface, and fill the boxes with light until I see the "Go on. Open a box" message. Then I sell the light to the blind bruiser in London, and the boxes back to Khan's Shadow. (If the blind bruiser isn't available, the light can also be sold at the Isle of Cats, but with slightly less profit.)

- By now, I usually know where Pigmote Isle is, and have started the questline there. If I get their civilization to 10, I can buy infinite amounts of Scintillack for 55E per unit. I can sell that in London for 70 E/u, or at the Iron Republic for even more (but that's slightly more elaborate since you need to get the right store to open there, and it's usually a longer way to travel). This trade is an infinitely repeatable money machine, but it requires a bit of luck to set up. Also, if I'm in for a longer game, I may want to focus on Might instead of Civilization so that Pigmote can win an independence war, which will turn the island into a safe harbor for stocking up provisions and reducing terror. Ideally I'd raise civilization to 10 _and_ win the independence war, but that's very hard to achieve,

- If I still want to make more money, I go grind the Wisp Ways at the Mangrove College. To do that, I buy 40-60 candles, usually at the Empire of Hands (I buy provisions for 20E at the mayor, then exchange these for candles with the adventurer, it's the cheapest way of getting candles). Each time you enter the Wisp Ways, there's a chance to get a prize worth 800E or 1000E at the end (or other useful stuff). You need to monitor your provisions, terror, crew, and candles. If provisions run out, leave Mangrove College and wait until you get "Something awaits you", then re-enter and gather supplies, repeat as necessary. If terror gets to high, do the same, but choose "Eat, drink, be merry" instead of gathering supplies. If candles run out, buy new ones at the Empire of Hands. If your remaining crew approaches half of the full complement, get new crew at London or (more expensive, but usually quicker) the Khanate. The merchant cruiser has room for 30 zailors, so I usually get new ones once I'm down to 17, I prefer to have a small buffer in case I lose some on the way back.
(Note: the Wisp Ways are safe as long as you keep provisions, terror, crew, and candles, checked. The only other thing to know is to pull out when you're at your last candle, or if you draw the "mirror-surface pool" event. This is the only place in the Wisp Ways that can wound and therefore kill you; it's not worth the risk. Just leave and go in again.)

- While doing all that, there are also ample opportunities to pick up easy money at various places. Visage offers an easy way to get a captivating treasure worth 1000E, and the Curator in Venderbight can give you up to 13 of those treasure (but you'll have to know where to find the items he's looking for).

I don't think there's a better way of making money than the wisp ways (and then selling blue scintillack and captivating treasures to the archivist). However, if you prefer to do trading, here are three profitable trade routes that don't depend on luck and can be repeated infinitely:
- Buy sapphires at Port Carnelian, sell at Polythreme or (with higher profit) the Chelonate
- Buy coffee at Adam's Way or the Khanate. Exchange coffee for parabola linen at Irem. Sell that at Adam's Way. On the way, buy fuel in the Khanate as needed, get free provisions from Aestival, and reduce terror in Irem or the Mangrove College.
- Buy mushroom wine in London and sell it in Godfall. (Note: This trade will eventually become unavailable as game time progresses, but by the time it does, money should not be an issue any more.)

Lastly, here's some advice specifically for ships with small cargo holds, and for captains who can't yet afford a bigger ship:
- Always collect port reports and hand them in at the admiralty. With a small cargo hold, port reports will usually make you more money than trading.
- Try to do fulfill the requests of the Merchant Venturer in London. He'll pay you a lot, and you usually only need 7 units of cargo for one request. _Don't_ take his last request (the one that warns you about the 40 units of cargo) until you have a bigger ship, though.
- Try to collect the intelligence the admiral is asking for. Don't hand it in immediately though, as that will only give 75E. Instead, gather two pieces of strategic information, then combine them in your inventory to vital information, which sells for 375E. (You can also sell it to the voracious diplomat for 500, though that may have undesirable long term effects.)
- Pick up clay men in Polythreme and bring them to London. You have no purchase cost, 20E per cargo unit revenue, and if you need the cargo space for anything else, you can ... ahem ... throw any surplus clay men overboard, they won't mind. This method loses its appeal once you have a larger ship, since you can only pick up a maximum of 6 clay men at any time. But it's ideal for small ships and/or poor captains since there's no initial investment and no risk involved.
- Pick up the Tireless Engineer, either in London or Frostfall. If you follow his quest line, you'll pretty soon get to a point where he wants to catch dream snakes in a mirror box. This is infinitely repeatable. You can buy six mirror boxes in Khan's Shadow for 1500E, pick up six clay men in Polythreme, go to Hunter's Keep to fill each box with a dream snake (you have to talk to the Engineer after each catch to unlock the snake-catching option again), then sell the six filled boxes back at Khan's Shadow for 3000E. This is probably the most lucrative (per cargo unit) infinitely repeatable trade in the game, but limited to 6 items per route. You can also bring one (but only one) box to the Curator in Venderbight for a captivating treasure.

Anyway. Hope that was a decent answer to your question, sorry about the wall of text. Respect to anyone who read it to the end. ;)
