Well done whoever at Failbetter implimented this trade...severely diminished this quest line imo
Farm SAYs near Wither to get the "restaurant" event where you are offered to try various seafood. It has approximately 30% chance of appearing, so fairly high, and you can also farm lifebergs for free resources while you wait.
The hardest "hearts" option in the event gives you +2 iron, mirrors and hearts on success without a drawback. You need about 100 hearts to have a 50% chance of succeeding, and obviously, the more you do it, the more hearts you get and more often you succeed on later attempts.
Actually, lockboxes are really only useful for a limited time; and you can often get a couple for free while completing other quests.
The story is very cool, and can potentially reward you with a legacy item (although there are other ways to get that item) and various other rewards. You'll also likely need to get at least part of the way into the Station III story if you want to complete the Princepts of Coral story, although there might be another way to require that particular resource I'm thinking about...
Once that story is over, lockboxes become just another somewhat valuable trade-in opportunity. While you're completing the story, though, finding those lockboxes anywhere else can be rather dangerous and/or expensive; and it's a hassle to go out to Irem for (AFAIK) the only other reliable way to acquire lockboxes when you need them.
