An Adumbration of her Heart sucks? [Spoilers]
So my old general strategy when I played this game pre-Zubmariner was to get all the legacy items, then choose Poet as my past so I could start with a 75 in Pages, since Pages can't be trained up with secrets from your officers like other stats. I was excited to bring this up higher with the new legacy item... but I discovered that (haven't long forgotten the rules of stat bonuses from your past selection) that your choice of past doesn't give you a bonus if your stat is above 50 from the start of the game. So before I completed An Adumbration of her Heart I could start with a 75 pages... now I can only start with a 60.

This makes me sad.

Is there something I'm missing or, mechanically speaking, is getting An Adumbration of her Heart just a bad thing overall?

UPDATE: I emailed Sunless Sea support about this issue and got a reply this morning from Caolain Porter saying "Thanks for the report! I've raised the stat caps on the stat boosts from choosing a past, so this shouldn't crop up again after the next update." So hopefully this won't be an issue in the near future!

To be honest, pages is a pretty bad stat since the amount of fragments you will save won't matter as much as the stats you will lose by simply picking to be a poet, pages also doesn't have many stat checks compared to the other stats and the game simply isn't hard enough and has better sources of secrets than gathering fragments(killing lorn flukes, with the two pages legacies you will get enough pages to pass the challenge on a dead lorn fluke reliably without having to waste your past on pages)

But yes, it wouldn't be very hard to slightly increase the cap for picking to be a poet so you can have all the pages legacies and still be able to get a boost from picking to be a poet.

I hadn't even thought of that, but that pretty much utterly sucks. It ruins an entire line, too. Great reward for buying the expansion. At least if true.

I would go ahead and submit a bug report, since it seems pretty likely to be unintentional and the fix is super easy!

Are you suggesting I might be lying? I was so bummed by this discover that I quit the game right after picking my past, so if you want, I can get a screen shot of my stats and my legacy items in my hold, and my Poet past officer...

I'm not sure where to do that. Can you tell me?

Check out the top of the discussion board, there's a pinned post that goes over how they want you to report a bug.

I had thought that if you had 50, not more than 50, you got no bonus... just assumed that once you had all the items that you didn't get anything from the pasts other than the companion and questlines. Wiki says <= 50, and your shot seems to confirm it. I'm not entirely why they put a limit on it anyway...

well it's possible then that the bug was in the run i did just before the one in the screen shot, where I had all the books but not Adumbration, took Poet and had 75 pages. Either way, I guess I'll submit it as a bug.

an, Adumbration makes it so you can't start with higher than 60 pages. Is annoying.

The ferret also causes this for hearts.

Whoa wait, what? You mean because the +1 hearts for the ferret is factored in when you choose your past, if you choose the one that gives you +25 hearts, it doesn't give it to you? that DEFINITELY can't be as intended...

This combines to make the Correspondent Legacy absolute garbage.

I think I did Correstpondent once... when the Salt Lions was as close to London as it could possibly be and I wanted to get the Book of Miracles super quick.

The code tag reads that the background bonus is applied when the associated stat is "nomorethan" 50, which would suggest that it works when you have the legacy, but not when something like the Adumbration or Ferret bumps you over the limit. It also means that if you hold off selecting a background for a while, it's possible you won't get the background bonus :/

Seems like a pretty silly restriction...

Is there a difference between the "natural" value of the stat and the value as modified that is actually used for checks? I thought you only inherited half of the unmodified value of the stat with a particular legacy, but even that can take you out of being able to also get a bonus for it with a legacy item.

I know when you're increasing stats with one of the Officer dialogues, though, where they can only increase it if it's below 100 or whatever, you can unequip something or unassign an officer to take you below that and increase it by the Officer dialogue.
