Sunless Sea: Battling the Lorm-Fluke
Okay, so I'm in the middle of the Pulse of the Principles quest, and one of the things I have to bring to the great cavern of sentient coral is Colossal Fluke-Core, which can only be obtained by killing a Lorn-Fluke and completing a pages challenge. I'm pretty set with pages, but I'm a little skittish when it comes to getting close to that spiny, violet blob of weird.

I have the Corvette as my ship, but have yet to obtain the Memento Mori (currently caught up in the Cannoneer's quest line as well as I need the Judgement Egg, yet another reason to kill a Lorn-Fluke). I've heard getting up on a Fluke's tail end can mitigate the damage somewhat, but I'm weary of putting this into practice. I know it's silly, but I've spent a lot of time with my current captain and am loathe to lose them.

So, long story short, I have an above-average ship, slightly above-average weapons, and am not sure if I'm in the best frame to take on a Lorn-Fluke or how I would even get that done. I'm not fond of beasts with ranged attacks.

I fight it the same way I fight most zee-beasts: reverse gear and keeping them at the edge of my prow lamp. That way the fluke only does very little damage to your Hull with its ranged attack.

That said, if you're afraid of failing you could just backup your save and reload it if things go badly.

I've done the whole reverse thing too, but haven't had much luck with it. Probably because I need a better engine. It's not the starter engine, (1500 engine power), but it's not the Fugent Impeller either. How fast is a Lorn-Fluke with their charge? I've noticed that faking out a zee-beast by dodging around some rocks usually gives you a small advantage.

If i remember correctly, lorn flukes only charge when at close range, otherwise they ''scream'' and it kills crewmember if your hull is low (and you get a lot of terror too). My strategy is usually to just get a nice ship and the serpentine, probably also a decent front gun.

Yeah, I guess if your engine is not very potent the reverse gear strat will not work in this case since it will close enough distance to charge you. I haven't been charged by a Lorn-Fluke in a long time so I actually don't remember how fast is their charge but I would assume is pretty fast.

I guess your best option would be to fight it sideways, circling around it and dodging its charges with Full Power if necessary but it's gonna take a lot of time. Or you could try what you said and use some rocks to your advantage.

Get any ship with an aft slot and put the Avid Suppressor in it, then any ship can do the "back up and shoot" strategy.

A (weird, and very cheesy) way to get a Judgements' Egg (if you have at least one Zee-Ztory):

1. Go to Fathomking's Hold, and choose "Descend to an audience with the Fathomking" with one Zee-Story and your "Something awaits you ..."
2. Choose "Witness an execution" if available (your chance is about one in four).
If not available choose whatever, leave, wait the 60 seconds for a new SAY and try again.
Once you've managed to witness the execution your SAY is set to 100 ("Blue lightnings crawl leisurely up the funnel. "St Erasmus dancing!" the cry goes up.")
3. Leave without taking any further action
4. Within 60 seconds (before the next SAY comes around) go to the nearest place where you have the option to "Go beachcombing". This should be either Melting Isles or Aestival. If need be stop at ports on the way to reset your SAY timer.
5. "Go beachcombing", and choose "Something softly shining ..." (which only appears with a SAY of 99 or 100). Voila, Judgements' Egg.

This is also possible if you don't have too many Zee-Stories. The "Witness an execution" action appears with a SAY between 1 and 25. Look at the message corresponding the SAY and see if it fits: https://sunlesssea.gamepedia.com/Something_Awaits_You
If it doesn't, just don't descend to the king and instead wait 60 seconds for another one.

i fight most zee beasts by ramming my ships nose directly into them and just opening fire as fast as i can. most freak the frell right out as they cant attack when your ships bow is right up against them, it even works on Mt Nomad. It works on Lorn flukes because their AI has them try to get some distance to do their main attack, only resorting to the magic burst every so often, and that seems to more set back a firing solution than do actual damage damage. it helps i have a chunk of blue shillintack that occaionally fills and lets me fast fire my weapons. I dont recommend this if you dont have one of the high HP ships though.
