People seem to be much more positive about the endings mentioned here, so I'm keen to try those next.
Incidentally, if Failbetter is reading: This isn't a criticism, because I have absolutely no idea how you would sign-post this in the game... Once I was on the scent of the immortality course, I was scared to get too far into many other story threads. I was simply too worried that completing other stories, such as the Carnelian Exile's tale, might end my captain's career (which, by the sound of this thread, was a wise choice). I drew very close to finishing the story of the engineer with the scorpion tattoo, but abandoned it after leaving Frostfound, while other Officer stories such as those of Maybe's Daughter and that tentacled chef finished earlier without ending my game.
Perhaps there's a way that characters could hint at this, or would it be too unsubtle?
"Captain, although I will be grateful for your help, I fear to ask so much of you. You have your own ambitions, and this path will consume the entire energies of two lives!"
And the engineer story gives THE BEST engine in the game.
