How to make a lot of money?
Most money-making guides either are very outdated, or only give 300-500 echoes profit, most of which I'll probably blow on fuel anyways. Is there any really good way to get thousands of echoes without spending a million years grinding?

I'm about mid-game, default ship, decent gun/engine, discovered pretty much all islands, haven't gotten to surface, good crew. Overall solid except for money.

The best way to make money fast is by trading Sunlight. You really need the Blind Bruiser to do it effectively though, so I hope you kept him around.

Simple version:
  • Use a 40 cargo ship. 24 to go to surface and fill 16 Mirrorcatch Boxes (Any more can be dangerous. Stay below 100 Burning). Resupply.
  • Go to Demeaux Island and gather supplies until you have 50 Terror.
  • Go to London, but make sure you don't have Something Awaits You. Rest to clear Terror/Burning. (you need Terror to be able to rest in the 10 Echo Lodgings)
  • Gain 6400 Echos, resupply and Repeat.

Tips to speed up the process:
  • Buy best engine asap.
  • Always have 10/10 crew.
  • Full Power! as long as you can do it without risking 50% crew.
  • Repair with supplies when the engine blows, and just buy new supplies right away. You make money so fast it doesn't matter where you buy it.

Check my guide if you need more details on the particulars. It is up to date.

Screw trading. Making money is super easy once you understand this is not a trade simulator.
The way i make money can net you about 1.5k to around 5k per trip depending on how you manage your terror.
Learn and remeber where your lorn fluks spawn. Killing them not ownly rewards 3 secrets on success but also a core regardless of out come that sells for 500echo. lI have 4 that spawn in my game along the south and east so if i kill all of them at least once i got 2000 echos going back to town. If you can manage your terror then you can make it to town with loads of money. my current record is 8000echo with the trip costing about 1000echo. The best thing about it is you can do it as much as you want. Unlike the sunlight trade which you can only do so much due to them limiting it with ther debuff that makes you open your boxs.
Id recommend a ship with a forward and deck weapon slot. Also would be nice to have blue scintilac. There range attack deals little dmg and adds a bit of terror so just tank them, If they ram you it really hurts.

Another tip is to use your lucky day up at irem. Gives you the best rewards money wise.
If you would like any other tips or to just talk about it hit me up :D

Deal in Dread Surmises.

This is the highest profit option in the game.

It makes Red Honey look like chump change.

Also though, since you seem concerned about money, seriously, RED HONEY is how you hook up with some serious cash, bro!

So long as you don't care about nonsense like your eternal soul and stuff.

Um, the only place I know where to get red honey costs 600 echoes a pop. How much does it cost to sell / where can you sell it? Also, what the hell are dread surmises?

You can sell it at London for 900-1000 echoes(selling it in the Brass embassy will give you 999 echoes, the most reliable way to do it, though you probably didn't unlock it yet).

Dread Surmises are an item that cost 9 searing enigmas to make, you can make it in the Iron Republic on a specific day(you can also buy one for 7 searing enigmas, but it's a one time choice and there are some pretty big negative effects to doing it this way), selling a dread surmise in Irem will give you 10 searing enigmas, which means you can go back to the Iron Republic to buy it again and make profit(though you always need to return to a specific day in the Iron Republic).

I still just say get rid of the rng of it.(specific day at iorn republic) and just grind lorn fluks. each core gives you 500 echo and if you manage your supplies(via atestival/ collage) ur fuel(any wear really your making bankg) you can have around 7 cores going back. In one day im at around 39k echos. when you kill them just leave to a new area stop at port then head back and thell be respawned.

All that is required is a good weapon. Thats it. So its really cheap to start.

I made initial money with Salt Lions and coffee trade with surface. Then smuggled sunlight till it got dangerous. Bought trade ship and started doing following run:

London - port Carnellian: mushroom vine.
Port Carnellian - Chelonate: sapphires.
Chelonate - Polithrem: stigian ivory.
Polithrem - London: claymen.

Gives good run around the map for all the quest-related purposes, allows to collect vital intellegence along the way, allows to pick up red honey, gives many port reports. Overall, really sweet.

Considering sunlight smuggling: I made a mod to make it easier. Filling your boxes and getting rid of Menaces: Yearning, Burning works now both with one click and - depending on the mod version you use - there is no terror requirement to get rid of the latter. https://www.nexusmods.com/sunlesssea/mods/13

Another pretty good run is coffee to Irem to get Parabola-Linen to sell in London. The Linen sells for 60. Coffee is for sale at 50 in the Khanate and less in London or especially in Iron Republic, on certain days.

Red honey.

If you have no morals at all, this is the way to go.

Because after you became immortal, got beheaded, lost your soul to some d____n bell, and got touched by a literal god, "morals" still apply.
