There isn't anything that outright tells you this (outside of squinting and staring at the preview vid), so you are not the only one to run into this confusion.
For what it's worth, while I picked up on this fast I realize that it is not presented very well. Particularly when it's not exactly how most Agents work. (I also prefer his SMG too. One hit exploding trash moves with the charged gun isn't so handy when there are dozens of em and your reload gets interrupted constantly)
He has an SMG, Flare gun and also Plasma Thrower, which is the one you're talking about, the one you can charge.
Honestly, they're both horrible and just the SMG is worth it. There is no real need in this game for a lot of AoE, making the SMG by far the best choice as it has way higher DPS, both by default and because it can actually reliably crit, unlike the other two.
The flare gun one is pretty fun even if I don't prefer the effect it has on his special, and the charge shot is very satisfying when how wonky the game deciding to actually reload your weapons isn't throwing you off.
But a heaping helping of old fashioned bullets is just more well rounded for gunning down hordes of trash moves or putting a bunch of crits into a ranked target's face.
The reload interrupt issues of Pierce's single ammo charge gun Reminds me of Oni. "Oh good, I can spend a core so cloaking makes him auto refill his ammo." *Cloaking interrupts reload animation, has to use reload animation while cloaked anyways*
It's not just the effects or the fact that the SMG is more well rounded, "gunning down hordes" SHOULD be the strength of the other two, you know, since both are AoE although the launcher i believe has a very small AoE.
Anyways, their dmg output is just virtually nothing compared to the SMG, which fires incredibly fast and can easily do 500-600 dmg a pop. I'm pretty sure Kingpin with his SMG is one of the most damage dealing Agents in the entire game.
As for Oni's buggy Smokescreen core upgrade, i posted a solution for that in the very thread that mentioned it: Simply cloak when you have 1 bullet left over, yes it should be fixed and is not an optimal solution, but the best one you have and should definitely be aware of as it's a very powerful upgrade.
This way you simply miss out on 1 bullet instead of the entire upgrade, and get a free 6 bullets instead of 7, or 9 instead of 10 depending on what Gadgets you're using.
