I play it because the matchmaking is quicker..that's about it.
I know your feelings well.
That aside, I don't think For Honor is a well enough balanced game for good old beatm'up 1v1 fights/duels. I'd rather play a more refined and pure Beatm'up than FH if that's what I'm looking for (The Street Fighters, Mortal Kombats and Tekkens... and so on).
However I do get your point as to why people tend to stick to that mode so very much, personally i really like Deathmatch modes, Matchmaking takes a couple minutes or more depending on the day but i find them really enjoyable, same with brawl, yet these modes are less popular.
Duel I don't mind too much, can be good for a quick matchup but its not one that stands out a whole lot to me neither, yet that is again one of the most popular modes, but I can see why its a go-to mode.
This is basicly my new Mount&Blade MP experience.
When Jason Vadenbergh announced this on the UBI panel, I cried a little because my prayers were heard.
Hell, I'd wish there were gamemodes with even bigger teams.
But a really good player will take advantage of that by playing goood defense and time it's counter attacks.
You have no idea how satisfying to win against the odds.
That's why I like Domninion, I still like 1v1 but it sometimes gets really boring when your opponent decided to stare at you and doing nothing but block.
In fairness Dominion was the only map with a large enough area to actually "duel" in.
Dominion without feats and gearstats would also be great.
My reasons for playing is the same as others, it's fast, gives the highest amount steel and experience and is of course, the most played.
I also like the challenge of fighting other players and apply anything I've learned, though it's kind of pointless, since the common strategy now is to hold down and block/parry anything till the rest of the team arrives.
No need to apply advanced knowledge when you and your three buddies can just CC-stunlock one or two guys till they die and then emote spam over their bodies as if though you just won an epic battle.
