Yeah, Gladiator is extremely strong because of this fact.
As a result, gladiator is terrible at opening, and can thus be a difficult character to use effectively at higher levels. The only "wild card" move gladiator has is his unblockable impale, which can have great mileage against the right opponent.
I love playing gladiator-- and love fighting him, too-- but despite that bias, if you encounter a player that can simply dodge your bashes and excels at turtling, your mixups become extremely limited.
