kensei for overall effectiveness

orochi if you like the idea of deflects but do not feel like a ninja (if you do feel like a ninja then take a guess wich that is :D)

aramusha if you want to marry offence and defence into a dance/waltz like movement (if you have enough experience you can make that work through soft feints and hard feints (only seen it once tho and hot damn was that hard to counter for mexD))

shugoki if you feel like you want to be a monster, and with enough experience and a good parry game you can be, usually:D

oh and theres nobushi but i dont have an opinion on that for lack of experience:D

Let me fill in for Nobushi then.
Nobushi is fun because your hidden stance is cancer enough to make people rage. Her attacks are pretty fast, but also predictable, which means you can easily get parried.
Her kick can only be achieved by first hitting or using hidden stance, so it is hard to use it against people who know how to play against you.
A hero who's kinda hard to play imo, but fun.
Oh and also, cat ears.

Shugoki's fun but also trash tier. Everything get parried, but you're strong in ganking. Even though he's fun, I don't recommend buying him as a first hero.

All of them are good except Aramusha who is menace to newbies but once you fight somebody more experiened you feel like Aramusha is going to be parried all the times and you arent much wrong. The only way you can make Aramusha work is by playing console versions of the game which are capped at 30fps making Aramusha viable.
I dont think Kensei is best, I feel like Orochi is slightly better and Nobushi is either slighly better than Kensei when facing enemy who has average Matchup knowledge or slighly worse if enemy knows Nobushi well.

start with kensei because of super balanced char with everything basic. Also very viable for every game mode.
Then nobushi because she is unique hero like no other and fun. And yes cat ears. Nyabushi! ^_^

Because i played many many times with kensei against him/her, player and AI and he/she got recked as a hell
