I've got the Starter edition. The regular heroes (non season pass) are 8000 Steel each to unlock while the season pass heroes are 15,000 Steel each. If you think you'll play the game every day the starter edition is fine. It just involves more of a grind.

With the in-game missions you can get Steel relatively quickly, 800 per day minimum plus way more for the more involved missions. I've already unlocked 2 heroes in like 4 days, and that's with buying Champ status for a few days as well. If you're going to do it this way you have to fight the temptation to buy any new executions/ emotes / outfits / etc though.

I just picked up the season pass since it was 50% off. Thirty bucks for the starter edition and pass isn't bad. You get a month of Champion status with the pass as well, which gives you a little bonus XP and loot after matches.

EDIT:

For anyone else reading, the Gold edition is only $25 while the free weekend is going on. Much better value than getting the Starter + Pass seperately like I did. Learn from my mistake!

Forgot to say that that the two easy daily missions can usually be done in duels vs AI so they're REALLY easy to get done. Just doing those every day would get you a basic hero in 10 days, but there are usually other easy ones as well.

Here are the quick details:

$15 USD / 15 Euro
All game content, maps, modes, and events are available in the package
No split between Standard Edition and Starter Edition player bases
3 Vanguard Heroes come fully Unlocked
3 additional Heroes (of your chosen Faction) are playable but not Recruited
Unlocking Launch Heroes is 8,000 Steel
Unlocking DLC (Post-Launch) Heroes is still 15,000 Steel

. What content is available? What content is not available?
A. The Starter Edition offers the same game modes and maps as the standard edition.
The only difference is the the number of playable/customizable heroes and the unlocking system for non-playable/non-customizable heroes (see Q3).

Q. What is the unlocking system for heroes in the Starter Edition?
A. Below is an overview of the unlocking system of the starter edition in comparison to the Standard Edition:

The Starter Edition:

Fully unlocks the 3 vanguard heroes (Warden, Raider, Kensei). Fully unlocked characters are both playable and customizable (weapons, armor, emotes, executions, effects, etc).
Provides 3 additional playable Heroes, depending on the faction you have picked (Vikings, Samurai, Knights). You can fully unlock these heroes for 8,000 steel (in-game currency) each to be able to customize them.
Allows 6 additional heroes (from the two non-chosen factions) to be fully unlocked (playable and customizable) for 8,000 steel each.
Allows heroes from post-launch seasons (including Centurion, Gladiator,Shinobi, Aramusha, Shaman and Higlander) to be fully unlocked for 15,000 steel (same as in the Standard Edition)

Example: A player who bought the Starter Edition and selects the Knight Faction as the faction of their choice will have access to: Warden (fully unlocked), Raider (fully unlocked), Kensei (fully unlocked), Conqueror (playable), Peacekeeper (playable), Lawbringer (playable). The Conqueror, Peacekeeper and Lawbringer are then recruitable to allow customization for 8,000 Steel. All remaining Heroes from launch are fully unlockable for 8,000 Steel too. All heroes from post-launch seasons are fully unlockable for 15,000 Steel.

Q. How can I fully unlock or purchase other Heroes?
A. Heroes can be fully unlocked with in-game currency known as steel. Steel can be acquired through playtime. 8,000 Steel is equal to 8-15 hours of gameplay (depending on how you play) or, if players would like to unlock heroes instantaneously, they have the option to purchase steel through the in-game store.

Players can also fully unlock the remaining heroes from launch (vanguards already fully unlocked) with the All Hero Bundle for 50,000 Steel. Heroes released in post-launch seasons remain 15,000 Steel.

Q. Can I upgrade my Starter Edition to Standard Edition?
A. A player who bought the Starter Edition will always launch the game as For Honor: Starter Edition, however, the content unlocked from the All Hero Bundle for 50,000 Steel grants players the same amount of playable/customizable heroes as the Standard Edition. Note that this has no effect whatsoever on matchmaking and content available, this only affects the title of the version that you are launching.

I have the standard edition and I feel that its only $5 to save you hours of grinding to unlock the character. Then you have to grind more steel to get the cosmetics you want. And the dlc characters are even more expensive. So its up to you if you're willing to grind that hard.

I got the starter edition when it was free and for a long time now I have all characters unlocked from the base game and all dlc ones (although Pirate only on console) and I find starter a good alternative for people who don't mind the grind

It's a pain but only because you'll find yourself wanting to spend the steel on your favorite hero. if you really wanted to unlock them all you wouldnt hate the grind that much
