Claymore or a Gladius?
My friend and me were discussing in a real life medieval duel. Which would be more effective and who would win? A Claymore or a Gladius? A detailed explanation of your pick would be greatly appreciated.

Just looking at it simply a Claymore would probably be a lot harder to use and slower to wield, making the Gladius the likely victor. Theres a lot more flexability with the Gladius than the Claymore, although the Claymore is a powerhouse in comparison.

Depends

Gladiuses were always used with a scutum( large rectangle shield ) which with that the gladius would win without it the claymore easily a common misconception is that it’s heavy and hard to use when claymores were surprisingly light and can give you good defense and offense

The gladius typically wasn't unsupported like it is in the game, most one-handed weapons were paired with shields throughout history. If we're speaking in terms of how it is in the game, with the gladius being on its own, the claymore would certainly win. The range of the claymore is a huge advantage and the gladius is quite poor for defense on its own. The only real way a gladius would stand a chance unsupported would be in close range and even that would be difficult.

In light of this conversation, if this game were at all bound by real life, the LAWBRINGER would be the most unkillable thing in the game xD

Gladius wins that match up with or without a scutum, incredibly light weight with great thrusting power, a lot like my love life.

I read "scrotum"... -_-

"With or without a scrotum, incredibly light weight with great thrusting power"

Had to re-read and see that I read wrong -_-

It's all well and good having T H R U S T but the gladius' design makes it very difficult to parry or block with due to the lack of a substantial guard. And claymores only weighed 2.5KG.

I'm guessing your not gonna stand there and take hit for hit so a Gladius would allow you to nip in and stab. The claymore can swing wildly and hope to hit.

The claymore only wins if they can keep the distance tbh.

In a real life medieval duel chances are the claymore would win.The distance gives it a very important advantage, while with only one good hit you should be able to end the fight immediately due to claymore being this huge. The gladius is very short, and managing to get in range to attack should be very hard.Maybe if the gladius user was supported with a shield things would be different, but I don't know,I guess it could go either way in such an event.

Remember that unlike in for honor, in real life just getting hit once could mean you losing the fight,so the fact the claymore user will be able to strike first due to his advantage in sword length is much more important than you may think.Blocking the claymore with the gladius should be very hard to do as well, due to how heavier the claymore is.So if you are armed only with a gladius, you would basically be unable to even get in range.

Claymores would weigh 2,4 kilograms which was surprising for it's size. The weight would not be too much of an issue

It's true that you would have to dance around the claymore user to basically stand a chance. I guess it just comes down to skill of the fighters, as always.

a claymore is NOT a slow weapon, a skilled user will be quicker with it than someone wielding a single handed sword, someone with a gladius would stand VERY little chance because of the reach and impact advantage the claymore user has. Remember, one good hit and it's over, double hits were a VERY common thing and as a result two combatants would just deliver fatal blows to eachother and they both ended up dead. Take just those few things into account and you will see the circumstances would greatly favor the claymore user.

practicing HEMA I have gone up against people using just a longsword against my one handed sword and you very quickly notice you lack speed, strength and maneuverability. Contrary to hollywood belief a one handed sword is generally not swifter than a two handed sword in a lot of situations, fighting one handedly is much more exhausting than fighting with a two handed sword and as stated before there is a significant reach advantage which is a HUGE factor.

I'm in a way repeating cybermonk in my own words I see as I write my comment hehe. It's very true though.
