Thinking of playing, but what is the best edition to buy?

Really depends on how much time you want to put in the game and how many heroes you going to play.

Standard. You can play the first 12 characters without buying them.

maybe Marching Fire on sale.
It gives you Arcade mode, which is not very fun, but give you some cool effects.
Also give you 20 Heroes to play and learn, which is fun.

Starter Edition only gives you access to the 3 Vanguard Hero of each Faction (Warden, Raider, Kensei). Base game heroes need to be unlock at 8k steel each while the DLC characters at 10k(S1) and 15k(S2 and 3).
Standard Edition gives you access to all base game heroes of everything faction (12 characters in total).
Gold Edition gives you Standard Edition + All Season 1 DLC characters.
