How does Reputation work with gear?

Because I have been away for quite awhile. I have 23 boxes of premium gear to open. I am just wondering when would be the best time to open them?

I heard online that you start getting the chance for better gear when you Reputation level is higher, and you start having a chance for the best gear at Rep 3. How does that work exactly? Say I wanted better gear for my warden, would I need to get her to Reputation 3 (60 levels) before I have a chance for the best gear? Or could I get three different classes to Reputation 1, making my overall profile Reputation 3?

To get a better gear for a certain character, you need to level that character up to Rep 3,5 or 7.
If you want to get a normal gear without involving too much time in your Warden, you can level him up to Rep 3 and open some boxes. If you want the best gea,r up him to Rep 7.

So reputations works per class and is not totaled across all classes in your profile. So if I wanted to get the most out of my premium boxes, I should wait until I got rep 7 with a class. That being level 140..

Exactly, the maximum gear level on Rep 3 can be 108, 144 on Rep 5 and 180 on Rep 7.

Basically you have 5 different kinds of gear rarities at the moment; Common (Grey), Rare (Blue), Heroic (Purple), Epic (Gold) and Legendary (Turquoise)

You start to get better kinds of gear when you get higher Reputation levels with the hero of your choice, ergo for example if you get your Kensei to Rep 3, you'll start to get Heroic gear for him; If he gets Rep 5, you'll get Epic gear, and if he's at Rep 7 you'll get Legendary gear for him

The better the gear the better the stats in most cases, but with high level gear you'll also have to be careful because in most cases two stats will have a great bonus, but one other one will have a hefty penalty

Also, after certain Reputation levels you stop getting gear of the lower tier, ergo for example you'll only get Rare and Heroic stuff at Rep 3

This way your best point to open Scavenger Crates would technically be Rep 8, since with Rep 8 and beyond you will ALWAYS get Legendary gear, whether from post-match look or scavenger crates
