Problem switching between controller and keyboard

This is a problem I've been facing since the beta yet despite a lot of research and asking friends for advice nobody so far was able to give me a solution.
I play the PC version by plugging in a PS4 controller and like to switch between this device and my keyboard for convenience and in order to type in the chat.
However, it often happens that upon pressing the key binding to open the chat window the entire game bugs out. I cannot type, I cannot exit the chat, I cannot move when the game starts, I can't do anything.
Tabbing in and out eventually gets rid of this problem but it takes at least a minute and I really can't blame anyone for accusing me of being afk and killing me in that time frame in which I simply cannot tell them that I am having a problem with the game.
I really want to be able to use the chat option and key bindings I have gotten comfortable with.
