What you want to do is try to block (from any direction) and then move your mouse to the overhead position and then do a counter attack. And in generaly you want to try to open up your combos with a quick overhead. If times right you can even interrupt regular light attacks with the warden overhead light attack similar to how regular light attacks interrupr heavy attacks.
And what about Valkyrie? it say that "Light attacks have superior block property during the startup. Use it to counter attacks" so that mean i can use light attack to block?
As far as my expirience goes - it has block properties at the start of animation.
usage: Your opponent starts overhead attack. When red arrow flashes ( parry indication) You starting overhead Light Attack. Enemy attack get's blocked because of your "crushing counterstrike" ability, your Light Attack passes and is actually unblockable.
