With a controller I can easily hold my ground against 3 players and most of the time even take one out before biting the dust.
With mouse and keyboard I can only deal with 1v1's.
The downside of controller is that the buttons for guard break (which you also use to counter a guard break) dodge and feint require you to take your thumb off your directional guard stick.
With mouse and keyboard you are always at all times in direct control of your directional guard although it is a very sensitive control.
If you want to get in easy and have a good time get yourself and wired xbox controller or something.
If you want to strife for perfection and be that peerless warrior on the field of battle and aim for rank 1 on the leaderboards (if that will ever be a thing) then mouse and keyboard are your weapon of choice. That is if you still have all your fingers attached to your keyboard hand.
Sidenote: In order for the controller to compete it would need 2 buttons on the back where your fingers are resting or something.
As a note if you're on the PC I don't think the controller keys were rebindable and you may need AHK if they don't fix it.
That said, most streamers seemed to have just settled on controller and I heard one say that they couldn't get used to KB+M. Try it out during the open beta and see what fits your style.
The Xbox Pad is more like Jump an Run Gaming at least for me.
+(Deadzone stuff) which i didnt like...
