Playing with Keyboard
Is it viable, or should I invest in a cheap controller? Looking for advice from anyone who played with it.

i played keyboard and mouse and its way better the controller in my opinion just for response reasons. But its playable with a controller and more casual that way so completely your own choice :)

The video in the thread I created here is with mouse and keyboard and the player is very skilled!

The controller is very very easy to learn and use however keyboard and mouse offer superior control and reaction times. The downside with mouse and keyboard is the mouse, it only takes the smallest movement for your guard to change which is good but also very difficult. If you move left to change guard in that direction and then stop your movement and without realising move the smallest bit to the top or right your guard will change. And trust me when I say this will screw you over a ton of times. especially when you get in difficult situations.

With a controller I can easily hold my ground against 3 players and most of the time even take one out before biting the dust.
With mouse and keyboard I can only deal with 1v1's.

The downside of controller is that the buttons for guard break (which you also use to counter a guard break) dodge and feint require you to take your thumb off your directional guard stick.

With mouse and keyboard you are always at all times in direct control of your directional guard although it is a very sensitive control.

If you want to get in easy and have a good time get yourself and wired xbox controller or something.

If you want to strife for perfection and be that peerless warrior on the field of battle and aim for rank 1 on the leaderboards (if that will ever be a thing) then mouse and keyboard are your weapon of choice. That is if you still have all your fingers attached to your keyboard hand.

Sidenote: In order for the controller to compete it would need 2 buttons on the back where your fingers are resting or something.

K+M is actually better then controller for using all your options such as feints etc... People don't fully realise it yet but they have extra stuff they can do.

Controller offers you better movement (obvious), but K+M offers you better combat control, which in the end is all that matters in this game.

Sounds like having an xbox elite controller is a very good way to play. Having the extra 4 buttons on the underside to remap some key controls so you dont lose guard control. Thats how I will be playing anyways.

To me keyboard will always win. Way much keys you can bind and mouse will always be more efficient for aiming than cobtroller's joystick.

As a note if you're on the PC I don't think the controller keys were rebindable and you may need AHK if they don't fix it.

Played with mouse and keyboard throughout without any issues. Unlike the poster above I had no problems with fighting multiple opponents, depending on which class I was (assassins generally have a harder time).

That said, most streamers seemed to have just settled on controller and I heard one say that they couldn't get used to KB+M. Try it out during the open beta and see what fits your style.

You guys may not know, but on M&KB you can actually bind the guard directions to straight up buttons, so that instead of moving the mouse to guard a certain direction you can just press a button to guard in that direction, great if you have mouse buttons, even better for Steam Controller.

I played m&k and had no issues at all, works pretty well. (I'm as bad with m&k as I am with
a controller)
