The Job Advancements are for the most part different playstyles for a number of characters (Elesis through Mari) while for others it's an extension of their 1st job (Dio to Edel).
As for beginner guides, I believe one is being made by some people, but there are people willing to help new/questioning players.
OMG ITS YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *feint*
Yes. If you reach level 70 on your character (or 50 as Asin or Lime), you should have a quest chain triggered. For the level 70s, it's called "Hunger for Thirst." If you did not get this while leveling, or if you deleted the quest without thinking, you're encouraged to contact Customer Support here:

They'd be able to instate the quest for you.
Technically, isn't there still an option to do surveys for Kching? Granted, I don't think anyone *wants* to do that, but it's still an option, albeit a bit slow.
After completing the initial mission (the one that awards Epic gear), did you click "Acquired Mission"? Doing so allows you to access a quest chain in each dungeon.
Well, I was just being technical there. I know that's not really 'free', in the sense that you have to take up your time to do it.
Regardless though, they do still give away the char slots fairly frequently (Though I'm unaware of more recent events, as I haven't played in a while).
There were 2 more as well, IIRC. I think both of the others were stamp events.
I don't really disagree that they should have a way to get them for free like they used to though, although it's admittedly not an issue for me, since I already have all characters but 3 and still have three char missions left over from before the change.
