About those two broken skills
These two skills will indeed remain strong for a long time. However, as the game approaches its final stages, they will eventually be outshined by debuff-focused builds.

Even with these two skills, progression in the midgame is frustratingly slow and grindy even for idle game standards. Maybe other skills like Dancing Dagger and Glint of Steel should be buffed, because I genuinely don't notice them doing or contributing anything meaningful to my damage output, and I've been hard stuck on area 6 for the majority of my playtime now, even after ascending a second time.

Hey man, I'm 30+ hours in and just 10 floors away from clearing Area 10. I've been exactly where you're stuck right now. My advice? Try out different builds to push through whatever main quests you can access first. It'll be a slow burn, but won't feel like complete torture.

I think that's the issue. You might want to ascend more often.

Ascending more often for minor benefits won't change my situation.

Breaking through progression walls ultimately depends on gear - which requires completing quests to unlock. The main purpose of frequent Ascensions is to test how far different builds can push at various stages, determining if they can meet the requirements for the next critical quest.

farm voids for gear, I think 10 gives most drops.
thats how you get ascendancy points, like a lot.
always try to do the hardest void of each tier, that will generate more drops but mind your dps. if it takes too long to kill, you should go for the easier one.
ascend when you think you will get good power boost with what you farmed up, remember to spend souls, gold before doing so.

resource/min is the key part of Ascension.

when new map opens, try to beat 10 first lvls of that map as soon as you can.

complete as many bestiaries as you can, they are very, very important, you also get completion bonus for each area/map: 0.1x exp gain multiplier.

follow the events/achievments as quest objectives.

you will always hit a wall with new maps, you are meant to farm and improve AND ascend before you attempt to beat it.
