they use MMO as a buzzword to try to get more players but it works pretty much like genshin impact where there can be a max of 4 people in your ''world''
https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/3041230/view/505072542004806773?l=english
Multiplayer games such as skull n bones, palworld, where you have 20 ppl/server for ex and can join other worlds or invite at will, but it is capped at 20 and you basically just jumping worlds, not playing "together" as "one unified world"
MMO sample is like PotBS/WoSB where you are playing along with 1000-2000 others in same server, same place, and you can meet them (albeit the game world is big to you to not get cramped). Everyone connected to a single server and world, which is shared altogether.
Elite dangerous even able to host 20k+ players per server but again the galaxy is so big that you rarely see people together.
So unless dev plans to make 1000+ ppl playing at a single world/instance, at same time, it's ain't MMO
This is the best way forward for games like this TBH. Leaving the MMO tag on the game is just going to hurt the games sales. 4 player coop or solo is the tags you need here. Not tags that steer players away from even looking further.
We plan a bigger multiplayer component than 4-player coop -- but we are only in the Alpha test now. If you go to MMO section of Steam and see what kind of games players tag as MMO you would probably be surprised. We don't want to misguide or misuse the tag. But we do believe our game -- at least its final vision -- fits this tag, in a wide sense. There is a lot to consider here, and we will. Thank you for your feedback!
No good to sink all the time and effort just on graphics. Instead build the interesting, dynamic world with RNG loot and MMO functionality. Otherwise it just die like all the other CoOp games lately, with just niceish graphics...
Hello again,
After considering all the opinions in this thread and other community discussions, we removed the MMO reference from most places for now.
While we have a lot of MMO features (or at least MMO-lite) in development, for now, in the current Alpha, they are not present. To be more specific and avoid confusion we decided to stick mostly with what we have in the current build. We do believe that after a few updates, we will tag MMO back in -- but we will do it when we have more MMO stuff to show or at least more details about MMO activities to share.
We also studied similar games and other games with MMO tag -- and to be fair, there is no unified system. There are vastly different games in MMO category, from classic MMORPG to session-based shooters. We are certainly not "MMORPG", however, MMO tag is applied (by both devs and players) to many games that do NOT feature "hundreds of players in the same world" and other elements. It seems like a matter of terminology, and a rather subjective one, but we prefer to play safe. Our intention is to be open, transparent, and position the game correctly, so that people who are likely to enjoy it, learn about it.
Thank you all for your constructive opinions. Cheers!
When can we try the game?
Which price will have?
The game is going to be free-to-play, at least that's the current plan.
As for trying the game, please stay tuned. We are doing our best to bring some news on that soon-ish! o7
This is a smart move. Now people will actually look at the game, MMO deters a lot of people away these days lol. (Means automatically no mods, no dedicated servers, no customization of options etc)
Now people can look forward to those things!
Do you think it will release this year or is it still a bit further out than that?
