Industry norm? This prelaunch has gone very well uptill now. All of the game its self works, this is an issue with there network, and there is no way to there network to prepare for this, other then the open beta which they did! I am with you in the fact that the industry is getting lazy, great examples of this are GW2, ESO, Age of Conan, and many others sadly. With all those games however, the game its self was broken and unfinshed...
You said it - no way other than the open beta. If that wasnt enough to fix their problems, maybe the open beta shouldve been extended. Also they did have other means to prepare for it. For example: count how many people bought head start. If you think this (pre!) release went well then I want you for my customer. I have been waiting all day for them to fix the login servers. Now that I got back in I was able to play 30 minutes just to randomly disconnect and to be put back into queue for another at least 40 minutes. I have been part of quite a few MMO releases - and no this is NOT one of the better ones, rather vice versa, especially considering that this is not even release yet, but a very expensive head start.
They argue, that they didnt create more servers, because its only be an initial problem. Of course this is true. The servers have been OVERFLOWING - literally. I have not seen that many people around in any MMO except for special events - not even at release. Even if half of them leave the servers will be far too full. Also, everyone playing right now has payed for 3 months patron status in advance - so its very likely that the server population will be very high for at least a few weeks - or until people just give up because it is so ridiculous and unfun to play the game in this state.
Lets just face it: in an industry, where people pay to be beta- or even alpha-testers, the customers opinion does not matter as there are simply enough other customer to care about the lost ones, even if its quite a bunch apparently. On the other hand companies should not forget about the SWG debakle or, even worse, the FFXI desaster. The first is an even SOE still doesnt want to think or hear about and the second one that Square Enix is still regret today. Whilst different because they have been gameplay related, they also majorly have been customer handling related.
I have tried all "solutions" to fix it , wondering if its the glyph server or something else
