When you see the Icon + multiplayer on the store page it means online multiplayer.
There is the same icon + Cross-Platform Multiplayer which means multiplatform multiplayer.

So for this game there are online and local multiplayer.

If it's local, does it matter if they see your cards or everyone can always see everyone's cards?

No, and you can look at everyone's cards in online play too.

Even if the store page says "icon + multiplayer", it's still good to look it up on the forums, or ask the question if you can't find the answer in a search. I've seen a couple of rare cases where the store page said multiplayer, but the game was only local co-op. When this happens, there's usually enough complaints from the community to have the store page changed fairly quickly... but it still happens and it's good to be cautious.

There are also cases where it says "multiplayer", and even though the game "supports" it, the online multiplayer is so bad it's nearly unplayable (I'm thinking of another game in particular, but I won't mention it here as it doesn't seem appropriate). In this situation, the community can still raise a big stink about it, but the tag will remain because the game "officially" supports it. So yeah... icon or not, it's good to do your research before buying.
