Enjoy it for now because starting with AC Shadows we get something EVEN BETTER: Steam Launches on Day One!!! Whatever negative stuff you want to complain about Ubisoft, they make really fun games and I'm very happy to pay full price to get them on day one! Thanks Ubisoft.
(AC Shadows releases everywhere including Steam on February 14, 2025.)
The release on Steam was contractually obligated. The discount was also contractually obligated because, at the time they wrote it up, they thought Shadows would be following very quickly (as part of the Steam Day 1 initiative). This was all announced in two separate financial earnings calls and statements. So they were hoping for sales of Shadows (full price) plus some possible impulse buys on Mirage (discount price) for those who hadn't bought it since they only buy on Steam. They also had a lot of data that those who bought Valhalla only through Epic, re-bought the game when it came to Steam.
In general, if you can get more income with sales via a discount than you would with a full price game, you do the sales via a discount. A known revenue generator strategy. Does it work? Sometimes. Sometimes not. The good news is: for the vast majority of us here, it really doesn't matter one way or the other.
Best time to invest.
