While people are right that Steam is essentially the same thing, Steam allows devs the option to disable Steam's DRM.

So some games you can just download with Steam and then play them without ever logging in again. It's rare, but they exist.

erm some games you DO OWN!
For some games (true, older ones i think) i got the serial number of the game,,,so..yea.... i would say i own it as long as i can use that to install it again from a cd/dvd/BRay
