1) Open up a Terminal window and enter "sudo opensnoop", and enter the Administrator password. This launches the Apple utility "opensnoop" which will print out (among other things) all of the files that a program is loading.
2) Run "The Beginner's Guide" from the Steam app, as usual, and watch it crash on startup
3) Go back to the Terminal window, and from its Edit menu choose "Save Text To..." and save all the text in the Terminal to a file
4) Open that file in a Text editor and search backwards for the last occurence of the word "Font" in the file. That will find the last font file that "The Beginner's Guide" accessed just before it crashed. For me it was "Trebuchet MS".
5) Open FontBook and disable the offending font. Then close FontBook and try running "The Beginner's Guide" again. This time it runs, yay! :)
